NSW RFS - Engadine Brigade

Engadine Rural Fire Brigade is part of the NSW RFS situated in the Sutherland Shire.

Engadine Rural Fire Brigade was established in 1916 and is brigade that is part of the NSW Rural Fire Service and is situated in the Sutherland Shire. We provide various services to the community including but not limited to fire suppression, hazard reduction, community education, storm damage work and various other emergency situations.

🚨 El Niño Has Been Declared – What Does This Mean for Our Community? 🚨

The Bureau of Meteorology has officially declared that Australia has entered an El Niño climate pattern.

So, what exactly is El Niño?

El Niño is a naturally occurring climate event that happens when sea surface temperatures in the central and eastern Pacific Ocean become warmer than normal. While it occurs thousands of kilometres away, it has a significant impact on Australia’s weather.

For much of eastern Australia, including the Sutherland Shire, El Niño typically brings:

🔥 Hotter temperatures
🔥 Reduced rainfall
🔥 Drier vegetation and soils
🔥 Increased risk of heatwaves
🔥 Elevated bushfire danger

After several years of wetter conditions, many areas have seen substantial vegetation growth. As these grasses, shrubs and other fuels dry out during warmer and drier weather, they can contribute to more intense and fast-moving fires.

While El Niño does not guarantee a severe fire season, it creates conditions that can increase bushfire risk and place greater pressure on firefighters and emergency services.

Now is the time to:

✅ Prepare your property and clear hazards around your home
✅ Ensure pumps, hoses and equipment are serviceable
✅ Stay informed about fire danger ratings and local conditions
✅ Download the Hazards Near Me app

Our volunteers will continue training, preparing equipment and working alongside other emergency services to ensure we are ready for the season ahead.

Preparation starts long before the first fire. The actions you take now could make all the difference when summer arrives.

From bush firefighting to village firefighting, training never stops.

This weekend our firefighters continued building their skills for responding to incidents in the urban environment, developing their understanding of fire behaviour, incident hazards and operational tactics through realistic training scenarios.

Every new skill developed strengthens our ability to support and protect the local community when it matters most.

Protecting our community starts with training.

Today we held our Annual General Meeting, where all Brigade positions were declared vacant and elections were conducted for the 2026/27 year.

With another AGM wrapped up, we’d like to congratulate all members elected to positions for the next 12 months and thank those who have served in these roles over the past year. The ongoing success of our Brigade is only possible because of the dedication, commitment and countless volunteer hours contributed by our members both on and off the fireground.

A special congratulations to Stuart Glanfield on receiving his 35 Year Service Medal – an incredible milestone and testament to his dedication to the Brigade, the community and the NSW RFS.

To make an already busy AGM even busier, a number of our members were also awarded the NSW Premier's Flood Emergency Citation, for those who contributed hours during the 2022/2023 floods. Congratulations to our members who received this award.

We would also like to extend our sincere thanks to our honoured guests for attending and supporting our Brigade: Nathan Sparks from the Fire Control Centre, Maryanne Stuart MP, and David Moncrieff MP. We greatly appreciate your ongoing support of our volunteers and the communities we serve.

Thank you to all our members who continue to give their time, skills and passion in service of our community. We look forward to another successful year ahead.

🚒 Congratulations Emma! 🚒

A huge congratulations to Emma on achieving her brigade driving qualification and becoming one of our newest operational drivers at Engadine Rural Fire Brigade.

This achievement is the result of a great deal of hard work, dedication, training, and perseverance. Learning to drive and operate emergency service vehicles is no small task, and Emma has shown outstanding commitment throughout the process.

A sincere thank you to the brigade members who have supported, mentored, and trained Emma along the way. Their willingness to share their knowledge and experience plays an important role in developing the next generation of capable and confident brigade members.

Most importantly, well done Emma on reaching this milestone. We are incredibly proud of your achievement and look forward to seeing you behind the wheel on future brigade activities.

Congratulations to our very own Captain Deborah Sharp for receiving the Australian Fire Service Medal (AFSM) in the 2026 King's Birthday Honour list.

The AFSM recognises distinguished service by members of Australian fire services and is awarded to paid and volunteer members.

Deborah Sharp joined the Engadine Brigade in 2004 and, before becoming captain in 2023, served multiple terms as the senior deputy captain, deputy captain, president and vice president. Through these roles, she has consistently demonstrated a calm, capable and inclusive leadership style, supporting both the operational capability and cultural wellbeing of her brigade. Deb is widely regarded for her professionalism, operational decision-making and ability to mentor emerging leaders, particularly women.
Deb has contributed across all facets of volunteer emergency service. She has made a substantial contribution to community engagement, serving as a community engagement officer, fundraising lead and brigade executive member across multiple periods. She has strengthened the public profile of the RFS locally, has built strong relationships with community organisations, and has promoted bush fire preparedness across Engadine and surrounding communities, increasing community resilience and awareness.
Deb has professionalised the brigade through her commitment to administrative and governance responsibilities, including the RFS member portal administration, permit issuing and executive functions. Her long service is characterised by sustained operational and personal a as commitment, exceptional leadership, humility and enduring service to the community.

Congratulations Deb, we are so very proud of you....well deserved!

Engadine brigade members were involved in the below search which ultimately proved to be a good outcome with the women being located and now safely in the hands of NSW Ambulance for assessment and treatment.

A huge effort by multiple agencies and members from right across Sydney.

A huge congratulations to our very own Brad Copelin who was honoured for his Veteran Volunteering role at the Premier’s Volunteer Reception event last week to celebrate National Volunteers Week!
Brad is also a dedicated member of the brigade and so very well deserving of this award. It is a privilege to have you in the brigade.

This is where the foundations start becoming capability. Repetition. Teamwork. Water on the move. Problem solving under pressure.
