Why map the ‘Head of Boarding’ role? What’s the point? The Head of Boarding role is serious, complex and involves a large number of components. This role mapping tool will help:
1. Cover all aspects of the role every year,
2. Create a calendar or program of events,
3. Document evidence of your planning,
4. Create a template for reporting.

This short BTA video explains the role mapping tool and shows you how to use it. The video is on the BTA website and the mapping tool can be requested from BTA.

This is our first BTA update of 2022 and we would like to acknowledge the challenges faced by so many Boarding providers with the ongoing impact of COVID-19, adverse weather events and even the shortage of food for some of you!

The performance appraisal process is crucial to effective staff management in boarding
– but it is not easy to get it right!
The process can;
• Help boarding staff feel valued,
• Enable Management to understand the strengths and weaknesses of boarding personnel.
• Assess the training needs of the boarding team
• Refocus the boarding team with new goals
• Resolve staff grievances

When Kylie Ryan arrived at the residence from her home on a remote cattle station, it was her third boarding school in two years. After a normal settling in phase, Kylie made friends and seemed to be doing well but then appeared to detach and become depressed and disengaged. When Kylie’s parents suddenly separated mid-term, the Boarding Manager decided to take a ‘case management’ approach to addressing Kylie’s needs.
