Lake Monjingup Nature Reserve

Lake Monjingup Nature Reserve Show and promote the unique environment of Lake Monjingup. ( ANCA Nature Conservation Award.) It was Officially opened by Hon. P.G.Foss. A small fee applies.

Lake Monjingup Reserve time line

1986 - Year of Peace - hence Peace Park where the original trees were planted.
1983 - First inspection of Monji Lake area. At that time it was used by bikies as a camping area.
1992 - A foot-bridge was built so that walk trails could be developed to the west side of the park.
1992 - Lake Monji won the John Tonkin Greening Awards.
1993 - June. The st

art of building the boardwalk.
1995 - Pathways with disabled access, and some seating were constructed.
1994 - Fencing was completed by volunteers and more paths were constructed.
1995/96 Federal Dept: for Tourism funded the building of the Environment Centre, this center was later used for many school classes.
1995 - Lake Monji was a Finalist in the John Tonkin Greening Awards.
1995 - Lake Monji was the winner of the National Landcare Awards. for Western Australia
1996 - Lake Monji was a Finalist in the National Landcare Awards. Category - ANCA Nature Conservation Awards.
1996 - The environment Centre was named after Mr Jack Ewert, one of the first volunteers for Monji. BA.LL.B.MLC
1996 - Stage two was once given over to farming, but now it was included in Monji. And volunteers came to help plant thousands of trees.
1998 - The students of Esperance High School helped to plant some trees.
1999 - Monji suffered severe flood damage which destroyed some of the boardwalk.
2000 - By 2000 the students from every school in Esperance had helped to plant thousands of trees.


2001 - The focus was on education. The committee applied for and was awarded a grant from Community Conservation Grants to buy tables and chairs which made it possible for the local schools to conduct some lessons in the Environment Centre. These lessons proved to be very popular with both students and teachers.
2001 - Composting toilets were constructed. Shire funds made it possible to have signs made for both stage 1 and stage 2
Our Zamia palm is quite unique. The largest is believed to be about 1000 years old and if standing upright would measure 4.5 metres high, plus the foliage
A Pet Cemetery for cats and dogs is proving to be very popular. This cemetery was officially opened 30th April 2006
A Maze has been established just under 1 km of paths to walk. The planning and the planting was all carried out by volunteers. Later a Gazebo was built in the middle of the maze. In 2009 "The Men in Sheds" built a gateway for the maze. The Maze was officially opened 30th April 2006
The local Scouts Group constructed an outdoor chess set, the pavers were laid and many people enjoy playing chess is this outdoor environment. With grants the Committee was able to have B.B.Q.s built. The local R.S.L. Group have plant a Grove and when in flower it is really beautiful. A Dedication of the R.S.L. Grove took place on 30th April 2006.
2007 - The Monji Committee with the R.S.L. Group were successful in applying for a grant. With this money they purchased a ride-on mower.
2007 - The Committee organised an “ Art in the Park” day for locals. These family days became very popular
- A Bandstand was built with the help of the Rotary Club.
- A Pétanque court was put in.
