SECOND CASE OF AVIAN FLU IN ROE ELECTORATE
The confirmation of a second case of H5 avian influenza in a northern giant petrel near Esperance is concerning but I want to reassure people that the situation is being monitored carefully, and all levels of government are working together.

The public are being urged to follow official advice and avoid handling sick or dead birds or marine mammals. This is an evolving situation, and I encourage all Western Australians to follow official biosecurity advice and report any concerns through the appropriate channels.

Any form of avian influenza is a reportable disease. Report any unusual mortalities, disease signs or reduced egg production to the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (DPIRD) or the Emergency Animal Disease Hotline on 1800 675 888.

Support The Nationals WA motion to commence an inquiry into fishing bans!

Next Wednesday, The Nationals WA will move a motion in the Legislative Council directing the government to commence an inquiry into fisheries management in Western Australia.

The inquiry would examine key issues affecting our fisheries, including fish stock management, marine parks, renewable energy developments, illegal fishing, shark depredation and whether government agencies are adequately resourced to manage these challenges.

With the numbers in the Upper House, this motion can succeed — but only if Members of Parliament hear directly from the people whose lives, businesses and communities depend on fishing.

The future of fishing in Western Australia is too important to stay silent.

Contact Legislative Council Members before June 17 and encourage them to support the inquiry.
