Please reach out if you have any questions about safe burning on your property.

The Official Bush Fire Danger Period will conclude at midnight tomorrow (31 March 2026) for the Wingecarribee Shire Council and Wollondilly Shire Council LGA's.

From Wednesday 1 April, fire permits will no longer be required for residents, except those properties within the town limits of Warragamba, Picton, Mittagong, Moss Vale, Bowral and Bundanoon, who are required to obtain a fire permit from Fire & Rescue NSW all year round.

Even though a fire permit is no longer required, you must still notify your neighbours and the local fire authority 24 hours before burning as well as comply with any Council Backyard Burning Policies.

Before lighting up, you should also check the forecast weather conditions and have sufficient equipment on hand to control and contain the fire to your own property. Failure to notify neighbours or the RFS, or allowing a fire to escape can result in significant fines.

To notify of your intent to burn, use the online burn notification tool at www.rfs.nsw.gov.au/notify or call your local Fire Control Centre during business hours.

An interesting start to our Saturday.

This Saturday, 7th March the Exeter Brigade has been asked to assist with the assessment of the latest trainee firefighters from across our district.
A very important role to ensure that our local brigades can continue to help our community. There will be increased fire truck activity around Exeter Village as we put the trainees through some practical training scenarios.

As always call into the station if you have any questions or are interested in joining the NSW RFS Southern Highlands team.

With Heatwave conditions forecast over the coming days, now is the time to review your Bush Fire Survival Plan and make sure you and your family are prepared ahead of worsening weather conditions.

Developing a Bush Fire Survival Plan isn’t difficult and only takes about 20 minutes. Have the discussion tonight with your family and friends.

Hot and dry conditions are forecast to peak on Saturday with temperatures into the low 40’s across the Wingecarribee Shire Council and Wollondilly Shire Council areas.

As we farewell 2025 and prepare to welcome in the New Year, we want to take a moment to recognise the incredible commitment of our dedicated volunteers and partner agencies.

Over the past 12 months, our volunteer firefighters have responded to 1,438 incidents across the Wingecarribee Shire Council & Wollondilly Shire Council areas. This is an increase of 141 incidents on last year, making 2025 the busiest year for the Southern Highlands in the past five years. Our volunteers have not only had a busy year locally but have also travelled across NSW, Australia and even to Canada to assist with firefighting efforts.

From motor vehicle accidents and storms to fires and assisting partner agencies, our volunteers have once again stepped up, often at all hours, in challenging conditions and away from their families to assist others in their time of need.

Thank you to every volunteer member, their families, supporters and employers who has made a contribution this year.

As we head into the New Year, we wish everyone a safe and happy New Year. Please continue to be Bush Fire Ready and ever vigilant as we move through the warmer months.

Thanks Exeter, Santa didn't realise how many nice children live here ! We wish you a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year ...
