08/06/2026

It is an honour to acknowledge Station Officer Peta Miller of Station 024 Manly who was awarded the Australian Fire Service Medal (AFSM) today as part of the King’s Birthday Honours.

Since joining FRNSW in 2005, Peta has built an outstanding career across a range of specialist capabilities, gaining qualifications in land-based rescue, Urban Search and Rescue (USAR), ladder platform operations and serving as a Hazmat Technician.

Throughout her career, Peta has remained actively involved in complex operational and specialist roles and she has contributed extensively to training and development by serving as a Hazmat Technician Instructor, HART Instructor, Hazmat Course Facilitator and since 2019, a USAR Instructor, helping develop the next generation of capability.

In 2011, Peta represented FRNSW at the Australasian and World Road Rescue Challenges in Wellington and, in 2018, played an instrumental role in the Australian and New Zealand USAR Taskforce deployment to Tonga following Tropical Cyclone Gita. She has also represented FRNSW at multiple international exercises and was pivotal to the success of FRNSW’s 2024 USAR INSARAG External Reclassificaton (IER), a significant 12-month project critical to maintaining the capability’s international accreditation.

Beyond operational response, Peta has made a lasting contribution to the organisation through supporting recruitment campaigns, including contribution to multiple episodes of FRNSW’s Drill Night Live online training and education sessions.

She has served as a board member of the agency’s Relief and Welfare Fund, supporting firefighters and their families through times of hardship.

Peta is widely recognised for her leadership, technical expertise, unwavering professionalism, commitment to firefighter wellbeing and her consistent mentorship and support of men and women in the fire service.

Congratulations Peta!
