Last night, our members came together with NSW SES Wollongong Unit members for a joint training session focused on the use of the CalTopo mapping application.

The session provided members with an opportunity to build their skills and awareness of this powerful mapping tool, which can assist in planning and coordinating search operations in support of the NSW Police Force. Volunteers explored how mapping technology can be used to improve situational awareness, track search areas, and support effective decision-making during search activities.

Training like this highlights the diverse range of skills required by SES volunteers and reinforces that being a member of the NSW SES involves much more than emergency roof tarping and clearing fallen trees after storms. Our volunteers are trained across a broad range of capabilities, including search and rescue, flood response, storm operations, community engagement, incident management, and supporting partner emergency services.

A big thank you to everyone from both units who participated and shared their knowledge throughout the evening. Working together and continuing to develop our skills ensures we are ready to support our communities and partner agencies whenever needed.

⚠️ AusAlert is a new national warning system that uses the latest technology to send emergency messages to compatible mobile devices.
It will be ready to use in October 2026, but before it launches, there is a nationwide test of the system.
‼️ On Monday 27 July at 2:00PM AEST, your mobile devices, such as mobile phones, tablets and smart watches, may receive a test alert.
The message will vibrate and include a loud, siren-like sound that lasts about 10 seconds.
If this could disrupt you or cause you or a loved one to feel unsafe, please turn off your mobile devices or switch them to aeroplane mode before the scheduled test time in your location, and leave them off for at least one hour.
As this is just a test, you don’t need to do anything, but in an actual disaster you should follow the alert instructions to keep yourself and others safe.

Community engagement comes in all shapes and sizes. Last week, our members visited St Luke’s Preschool to show the kids that when they see us out and about in orange, we’re there to help.

🦘Training Night with a difference - Learning with WIRES 🦇

Last night, we had the pleasure of hosting WIRES volunteers and a member of their Emergency Response Team, who delivered a fantastic session to our members on how to:

- Identify injured or distressed wildlife
- Safely handle animals to avoid harm to both the rescuer and the animal
- Understand what to do next and how to connect with the right support services

It was a really valuable reminder that our role in the community goes beyond the usual expectations. While SES training is often known for knots, storm damage, leaking roofs and flood rescues, nights like this highlight something just as important:

👉 Working together with other services to protect our community – and the environment we live in.

Emergencies don’t happen in isolation, and neither do we. Building these connections with organisations like WIRES means we’re better prepared to support each other when it matters most.

A big thank you to the WIRES team for sharing their knowledge and passion – our members got a lot out of it.

This Anzac Day, our members were honoured to attend the Dapto Dawn Service, standing alongside our community to pay tribute to the courage, sacrifice, and service of our Australian and New Zealand veterans.
