Community engagement comes in all shapes and sizes. Last week, our members visited St Luke’s Preschool to show the kids that when they see us out and about in orange, we’re there to help.

🦘Training Night with a difference - Learning with WIRES 🦇

Last night, we had the pleasure of hosting WIRES volunteers and a member of their Emergency Response Team, who delivered a fantastic session to our members on how to:

- Identify injured or distressed wildlife
- Safely handle animals to avoid harm to both the rescuer and the animal
- Understand what to do next and how to connect with the right support services

It was a really valuable reminder that our role in the community goes beyond the usual expectations. While SES training is often known for knots, storm damage, leaking roofs and flood rescues, nights like this highlight something just as important:

👉 Working together with other services to protect our community – and the environment we live in.

Emergencies don’t happen in isolation, and neither do we. Building these connections with organisations like WIRES means we’re better prepared to support each other when it matters most.

A big thank you to the WIRES team for sharing their knowledge and passion – our members got a lot out of it.

At the going down of the sun and in the morning, we will remember them.

This Anzac Day, our members were honoured to attend the Dapto Dawn Service, standing alongside our community to pay tribute to the courage, sacrifice, and service of our Australian and New Zealand veterans.

Lest we forget. 🌺

🚣 Who Let the Boats Out?
Yesterday, several of our members took part in the Who Let the Boats Out? training exercise — a regional on‑water training day bringing together SES units and other emergency services to practise boat handling, rescue techniques, and flood‑response skills.

Our team put their boating and flood‑rescue skills to the test on the water, working through realistic scenarios alongside neighbouring units.

A great day of teamwork, capability building, and staying rescue‑ready for our community.

⛈ SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS POSSIBLE

ℹ NSW SES Dapto Unit is urging members of the community to prepare for possible thunderstorms overnight and early tomorrow morning, bringing a risk of heavy rain.

🚗 Heavy rain can cause flash-flooding on our roads. Drive to the conditions, and as always - steer clear of flood water. If you come across a flooded road, find another way.

🏡 The NSW SES advises that people should:
✔️ Park your car under secure cover and away from trees, powerlines and waterways
✔️ Secure or put away items, such as outdoor furniture, trampolines and roofing iron that could blow around in strong winds
✔️ Keep at least 8 metres away from fallen power lines or objects that may be energised, such as fences or solar panels
✔️ Report fallen power lines to Endeavour Energy (131 003) or the provider shown on your power bill
✔️ Check that your gutters and drains are clear of leaves and debris
✔️ Relocate any furniture or personal belongings which could be impacted by flash flooding
✔️ Prepare an emergency kit in case you lose power or need to leave your home
✔️ Contact your real-estate, landlord, insurance agency or housing department as appropriate, if your property is damaged in storms. For urgent temporary repairs and assistance in an emergency, contact the SES
✔️ Monitor the conditions and keep an eye out for warnings issued by the BOM or NSW SES.

🌐 Visit the SES website for current warnings, emergency planning tools, advice on preparing for storms & floods, and more: https://www.ses.nsw.gov.au/. Visit the BOM website to stay up to date on the current weather situation: https://www.bom.gov.au/

A proud moment for our Unit 👏

Yesterday we had the honour of presenting a number of our members with the NSW Premier’s Flood Emergency Citation.
This citation recognises the extraordinary efforts of our volunteers who responded to the major flood events across NSW between 2021 and 2023, protecting lives and property under incredibly challenging conditions.

While a certificate and pin can never fully reflect the long hours, tough decisions and personal sacrifice involved, this award is an important acknowledgement that your service made a real difference to our communities.

Congratulations to everyone on well-deserved recognition and thank you for your continued commitment to serving others.
