EXSIGHT IS LOOKING FOR NEW RIDERS
See the following explainer from one of our captains, Rowan
Exsight exists to give vision impaired people a chance to get some exercise and social contact that otherwise they would not get, through tandem bike riding.
Exsight owns several tandem bikes (some of which are Ebikes) . Geoff Stratton is the main man, and most of the tandems are at his place in Figtree.
Most weekday mornings, a group of a few of these tandems rides to a local coffee shop (eg Warilla, Shellharbour or Oak flats if we’re going South) or Bellambi / Corrimal if we’re going North. The round trip usually takes 3-4 hours and is 30-50kms.
We need able bodied riders to be “captains” (ie the people on the front of the tandems!) to enable as many blind people to ride as we can.
I hadn’t ridden tandems before I joined Exsight – specially not with blind people! But its not that difficult really. And its very rewarding to meet the other volunteers and the vision impaired people - all of whom are inspiring and fun to get to know.
If you are interested in helping out, you can respond to this message - if you call you will be chatting with Peter, our secretary.
Then , the next step would be to meet Geoff, and have a practice with a tandem, and get onto the volunteers list.
Every week, Exsight sends an email out to its list of volunteers, asking if you want to ride and if so, what morning.
If you want to do it, you can just reply with the day(s) you can do it. THERE IS NO COMPULSION TO DO IT EVERY WEEK – even if you can only do it a couple of times a year, its helpful!
