Dawson Park Primary School

Dawson Park Primary School Dawson Park Primary School is a K - 6 government school in Forrestfield, Western Australia. The Pre Primary building was be refurbished in early 2013.

Dawson Park Primary School is located on the corner of Dawson Avenue and Bougainvillea Avenue in Forrestfield in the Perth foothills. The school has grown since its foundation in 1982 when it was opened to provide an education for students from new housing developments in the area. We are in the Shire of Kalamunda which has excellent relationships with our school providing us with funding to our s

chool P& C to run a number of programs and activities during the year. We have a dedicated and experienced staff of 24 teachers and 20 support staff. All staff members are part of our team and work together to ensure the students get the best learning experience available to them. Dawson Park has recently had new buildings constructed as part of the Building Education Revolution (BER). These include a music room, science room, covered assembly area and canteen in one block and a new library. The Early Childhood students are well catered for with a fenced area and new covered play area. Parents and community members play an important role in their children's educational life. Parents of Dawson Park students are supportive and work well with the school. There is a School Council which represents the views of parents and provides advice on educational and other issues to the principal. Parents also provide valuable help through the P & C, the Parent Auxiliary and by assisting with sports days, excursions and educational programs. The school has a small but highly productive garden which is maintained by volunteers and students. Seasonal produce is used in the school's cooking programs. As well as a high quality educational program the school runs a number of special programs for students to assist with their pastoral care and academic issues. Rainbows is a grief and loss program which operates at the school through the work of two trained specialists. A school Chaplain and School Psychologist visit the school weekly. The psychologist is supported on site by a Learning Support Coordinator. The school has a Computing specialist, a Phys-Ed specialist and a Music specialist. The school choir performs at assemblies and district events as well as at local community centres. To further assist with student's musical and physical development the Edudance Program operates for a term for all students from Pre Primary to Year Seven. A number of local organisations and personalities work in partnership with Dawson Park Primary School to enhance our various programs. Bendigo Bank has generously provided the school with funding which has been used to upgrade the old canteen so that it can be used for cooking classes and the Breakfast Club. The Breakfast Club is managed by volunteers from Forrestfield - High Wycombe Retirees WA and is the longest running breakfast program in a WA school, having started in 2001. Perth Airport has supported the school with a library grant sourced by the P and C. This has provided much needed new publications to our collection. The school has actively promoted this relationship and our students have been involved in several tree plantings in areas in the airport precinct. Your child will be made welcome at Dawson Park Primary School and we look forward to your enquiries. Further information can be found by visiting our website: www.dawsonparkps.wa.edu.au

This week, C3's busy little bees were buzzing with excitement as they began exploring the concept of area. Working with a partner, they used Unifix cubes to cover the surface of their homework folder and discovered that area is all about measuring how much space a surface covers. It was wonderful to see our hive working together, sharing ideas and making sweet new maths discoveries!

In Auslan this term, students across the school have been building their signing skills through games, stories, hands-on activities and creative tasks.

Upper primary students have explored the diversity of Auslan users, including people who are hard of hearing, Deaf, interpreters and people who are Deafblind. They also had the opportunity to learn the tactile alphabet and compare it with the Auslan alphabet.

Students have been applying Auslan in a range of meaningful ways. Year 4 students have been learning food signs and using depicting signs to create and assemble their own sandwich designs. Year 3 students have been sharing information about their own lives through a profile assessment task. Year 2 students have been describing animals using colour, emotion and size signs, and enjoyed playing memory games where they signed their answers.

Our younger students have also been very busy. Year 1 students have been learning colours and clothing signs through dress-ups, stories and character drawings. Pre-primary students have been working hard to sign letters, colours, emotions and numbers, and have especially enjoyed using dice games to practise their learning. Across all year levels, students have made fantastic progress and shown great enthusiasm for learning Auslan.
