We are deeply saddened to hear the news from Ballina, NSW this morning.

These selfless volunteers put their lives on the line to help others in need, and tragically made the ultimate sacrifice. Answering the call to assist others at sea is never without risk, and this is a stark reminder of the commitment and courage shown by marine rescue volunteers every day.

Our sincere condolences are with their loved ones, and with the entire crew and community at Marine Rescue Ballina as they navigate this heartbreaking time.

From all the volunteers at Marine Rescue Fremantle, we extend our support and stand alongside you in mourning. Their service and sacrifice will be remembered.

Around 10:30am this morning, rescue vessels Reliant II and R100, alongside Marine Rescue Cockburn, Water Police and the Department of Transport, responded to a vessel experiencing an engine room fire.

Reliant II was first on scene and, once the fire was brought under control, safely towed the vessel and its occupants into Fishing Boat Harbour.

Department of Fire and Emergency Services WA crews met the vessel at the jetty to assess the damage and ensure there was no risk of the fire reigniting.

A long tow for R100’s crew today! This 52 foot catamaran lost all steering around 32 nautical miles north-west of Rottnest.

R100 towed the vessel and her crew back to Fremantle, in an operation that took almost 7 hours.

No sooner was the vessel safely secured in Fremantle than R100 was again called out to investigate multiple reports of a distress flare in Cockburn Sound.

Saturday's Search and Rescue Exercise (SAREX) was a great success, with all targets recovered successfully.

In this mock scenario, a recreational fisher found floating debris off the northern end of Garden island. It was quickly identified that a boat had sunk and 4 "people" were missing.

As the scenario progressed, and search patterns were commenced, further debris was located by the rescue jetski team, made up of both our own and Surf Life Saving WA skis, who also later found one of the missing people on the beach on Garden Island. These finds further informed the search area, which eventually located the remaining targets.

These kind of exercises are extremely valuable as they enable us to work together across agencies and act seamlessly when a real scenario arises and lives are at stake.

A big shout out and thank you to all those involved:

Notice to Mariners: A multi-agency search and rescue exercise will be conducted today, Saturday 14th June 2025, in the vicinity of Cockburn Sound and Garden Island.

You will see a number of rescue vessels from Fremantle, Cockburn, Rockingham and Mandurah, in addition to our own rescue jetskis and also those from Surf Life Saving WA.

The exercise is being coordinated by the Department of Fire and Emergency Services WA and will also include Australian Border Force and Rottnest Rangers.

There will be a number of "targets" in the search area, including rescue mannequins. If you come across any of these targets, please leave them in place. Please note that all targets will be clearly marked and some may be anchored, so watch out for attached line.

We will have vessels on standby for assistance as usual, and our normal radio watch and log-on service will operate uninterrupted.

🚨 Volunteer crews onboard rescue vessels R100 and Resolute searched for around 5 hours last night for a 41 year old man, before locating him clinging to the hull of his upturned boat north east of Rottnest. 🚨

Shortly before 6pm we received a distress call regarding a vessel with 1 person on board, en route from Rottnest to Fremantle and taking water. As Water Police began a search operation, an EPIRB activation was also reported in the area from AMSA.

A multi-agency search operation was commenced, including 2 vessels from Marine Rescue Fremantle, Water Police, Marine Rescue Cockburn, Rottnest Rangers, Australian Border Force and several air assets.

At around 11pm, the man was spotted sitting on the upturned hull, by a police helicopter. Vessels were diverted to this location and Rescue vessel Resolute, first on scene, recovered the man from the water. After a brief assessment of the man’s wellbeing, he was taken to shore in Fremantle.

Our entire group are elated by this incredible outcome.

This incident again highlights the importance of correct safety equipment and procedures. Make sure you have an EPIRB, onboard and accessible. Invest in lifejackets, inflatable models are comfortably worn, not stowed. LOG ON with your local marine rescue group, if you are late logging off, we can begin a search much sooner.
