Fort Forrest Fremantle
Built between 1907 and 1908, Fort Forrest in North Fremantle was part of the first major coastal defence system protecting Fremantle Harbour after Federation. The battery stood on the north side of the harbour entrance at North Fremantle, close to where the Commonwealth Oil Refineries fuel depot was later built.

A message below received from Gilbert Brown:

Hi. would you mind posting the following? My maternal great uncle, Wilfred Froude Bates, was killed in action at Gallipoli in WW1 and my family research shows that he was listed on the North Fremantle Cenotaph because of his residency in North Fremantle. He married North Fremantle resident, Florence May Williams, and raised two children. The other day, as part of my family research work, I visited the North Fremantle Cenotaph and was shocked to see that he was listed as WH Bates and not WF Bates. The memorial was erected over 100 years ago and i'm a bit gobsmacked that it had not been corrected way back when. As a matter of respect, I am trying to get the matter corrected, but i don't expect much hope there! I'm just wondering if there are any followers of this group who have/had deep roots in the suburb and may have some passed me down knowledge about this issue, which I'd love to hear about. Thanks!!!

Newspaper clipping from 1962.
Mrs Backshall's maiden name was Brown.
Her parents were Mary and William Mather Brown, who lived in Isadore Street. Their house reclaimed so land could be used for Shell Oil.
