A little “farm fail” otherwise known as learning opportunity.
Three weeks ago we sold all our commercial chickens leaving us just these two large older heritage birds.
The reason we sold them is that they had discovered the veggie patch and were jumping up onto the wicking beds and digging out all of our veggies. So we had to lock them up. But then we thought about it and decided we didn’t actually need them because we have lots of ducks to give us eggs and we didn’t actually need the extra chicken eggs.
Also, we were feeding birds we didn’t need and so we thought we would save on feed. We kept these two larger older birds because they are too heavy to jump up onto the beds, and we have a soft spot for them.
However, since then, our dog who has not got a tick in the five years that we have been here, has had four ticks in the last three weeks!

Guess who’s picking up more chickens tomorrow?

A successful peanut harvest. The plants are still green and it would have been better to wait a few more weeks until they died back, but the rain we had last week has caused some of the peanuts to rot, and others to sprout- so it was time to harvest them.

A walk through the food forest this afternoon yielded a nice harvest of bananas, (three different varieties), Brazilian cherries, icecream beans, rosella (the last of it) and a few citrus (lemons and mandarins). We also saw this small carpet python having a snooze in the bananas.

Back in the garden over the weekend. Still quite hot in the sun, but not as bad as it has been. We are a bit behind with our “chop and drop” and now we are in to the dry season the material will take much longer to break down and feed the soil- so we are machine mulching it back under the plants.

Matt has spent the morning on the tractor, but now with the rain has come inside to help Miss E as we start to paint the dining room and kitchen walls and hallways. We like the green - but in some rooms it’s quite dark so we will be painting them a natural white.

Taking a break from patching walls and general housework to enjoy the “serenity”. Gentle rain, croaking frogs, birds twittering.
It’s so beautiful and green ❤️

Chickens - endless source of amusement.
Despite having many actual nesting boxes they’ve started to come up onto the veranda in the mornings and find weird and uncomfortable nesting options.
