With the increase in fire calls we’ve started to see already over the past week, Rural Fire Service Queensland Week is a timely event to acknowledge Woodlea Rural Fire Brigade, our volunteer firefighters and support members, as well as our wider RFS community.
Without members (all of whom are volunteers), Rural Fire Brigades (and ultimately the RFS itself) would not exist - outside of Woodlea, we are all people with our own lives who are full time workers, parents, a family member, a loved one, a carer, relied upon. Being part of a brigade means learning new skills, making new friends, and playing a part in keeping your community safe. But committing to our role also means we make sacrifices, cancel plans, miss sleep because we had to get up at 2am to potentially help save someone’s life, race out the door in the middle of dinner with the kids, experience that ‘feeling’ when the emergency pager alerts after really looking forward to a day to rest, because we are committed to the safety of our community.
Our volunteers make the Rural Fire Service what it is, and the members of Woodlea are dedicated and driven to fulfil our roles 24/7. Whether you’ve had rurals come and facilitate a hazard reduction burn for you, seen us at a community event, waved at us as we’ve driven by, or we’ve helped keep you, your property or home safe, we do it for our community and for the love of it, not for a paycheck. We would love to see more of our community volunteer their time with us (or the brigade in your area!) so we can keep brigades functioning.
