New TAC research shows rural Victorians are more than twice as likely as Melbourne motorists to drive without wearing a seatbelt.

The latest TAC Road Safety Monitor found 6.7% of rural drivers admitted to driving unbuckled in the past 12 months, compared to 2.8% of drivers in major urban areas. Rural passengers were also more likely to travel without wearing a seatbelt.

The survey also found people who do not consistently wear a seatbelt are more likely to report other risky behaviours, including speeding, drink driving and driving while fatigued.

Wearing a seatbelt is one of the simplest things we can do to stay safe on the road. It can reduce the risk of death in a crash by up to 50% for front seat occupants and up to 75% for those in the back seat.

New TAC research shows many Victorian drivers are doubling up on risky behaviours behind the wheel - a pattern of risk stacking that puts lives at risk.

The latest TAC Road Safety Monitor, a survey of more than 2,000 Victorian drivers, shows that in the past year:
• Nearly half reported driving while quite tired and speeding by more than 3 km/h
• 40% reported low level speeding and phone use
• Over a third said they drove after drinking alcohol and while tired
These aren’t one off decisions - they’re habits that add up. Every choice behind the wheel matters.

We’re continuing our work to reduce road trauma through campaigns targeting fatigue, speeding and drink driving, alongside police enforcement efforts across the state.

Road Safety Round is back from 23 to 26 July, bringing football netball communities together to support safer roads. In partnership with AFL Victoria, we're calling on clubs to slow down on the road.

Across the state, players will wear blue armbands to honour lives lost and reinforce their commitment to making our roads safer with the message being amplified at this Saturday’s game between Hawthorn Football Club and Essendon Football Club at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG). Shout out to Hawks star Nick Watson and Collingwood Football Club captain Darcy Moore for being our Road Safety Ambassadors for this year’s campaign.
