Wathaurong Aboriginal Co Op

Wathaurong Aboriginal Co Op We are here to support and politically advocate for the Aboriginal community in the Geelong and wider region.

We meet the needs of our community by providing culturally appropriate, quality services and programs which promote sustainable economic growth, political stability, health and well-being and environmental care that is respectful of Aboriginal culture. The Wathaurong Aboriginal Co-operative acknowledges and accepts its responsibilities to the community in providing increased opportunities for soci

al and economic advancement. We aim to have the Co-operative function in a way that will enable us to build and strengthen the social, cultural, economic, environmental and spiritual foundations of our community. We advocate for our community on issues which affect their lives and operate in a way that ensures the rights of our people are upheld. We work toward broader collaboration and maintaining partnerships with external stakeholders to ensure informed policy, program directions and service access and responsiveness. We represent community needs and interests in all of our dealings; this is the pure essence of community control.

On Sunday 24th May, we held a farewell event Morgan St site to allow community to come and reflect on what has been Wathaurong's home since 1996.

What started as talks around a kitchen table about a shared vision of forming an organisation that could be a place for the Aboriginal community to come together has grown into something special more than forty-five years later.

The site at 62 Morgan Street, North Geelong that includes the main Wathaurong Aboriginal Co-operative administration building, was first opened in 1996. The Health Services and Children's Services buildings were later added in 2008. The land surrounding what is known as Seagull Paddock was originally a tip - land that nobody wanted and did not know what to do with. Wathaurong Aboriginal Co-operative was able to turn the landfill site into a beautiful place of cultural connection for our community.

After saying farewell to the existing Morgan Street site, and taking a moment to remember the history and celebrate the memories, we also celebrate what is to come - the Wathaurong Dreaming project.

The Wathaurong Dreaming Project is a $43.6m redevelopment of our heart and home at Morgan Street, to create a purpose built community designed facility that would bring all of our staff and services back into one location and provide that place of belonging for our growing community

Keep healthy and strong. Complete a free bowel cancer screening test every 2 years once you turn 45.

Talk to your GP or Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander Health worker about making a bowel cancer screening test part of your regular check up.

Celebrating Mabo Day

Mabo Day marks a powerful moment in history when Eddie Koiki Mabo stood up and changed the future for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

On this day in 1992, the High Court overturned the myth of terra nullius – the idea that Australia was empty land – and recognised the truth: First Nations people have lived on, cared for, and belonged to this land for over 65,000 years.

Mabo’s fight led to the recognition of Native Title, acknowledging the deep cultural and spiritual connection to Country that still exists today.

We honour his legacy and continue walking the path toward truth, justice, and land rights.
