While the risk of H5 bird flu in pets is extremely low, it's best to take precautions.

If you're out walking your dog or spending time outdoors:

✅Keep dogs on a lead in areas with native wildlife
✅ Don't allow pets to investigate or eat dead animals
✅Stop cats from roaming and hunting wildlife

These simple actions help protect pets, wildlife and curbs the spread of disease.

If you suspect H5 bird flu in birds, mammals, poultry or other captive birds, report it immediately by calling the Emergency Animal Disease Hotline on 1800 675 888 or to DEECA online.

Celebrating our early childhood champions⭐

Today is Early Childhood Educators’ Day, and we’re celebrating the incredible teachers and educators who help shape some of the most important years of a child’s life.

Across our 11 Early Childhood Education and Care centres, 326 early childhood teachers and educators deliver sessional kindergarten, integrated kindergarten, and long day education and care services.

From first friendships and messy play to big milestones and growing confidence, our educators create safe, inclusive environments where children can learn, play and develop.

They also build strong relationships with families, providing support and connection during the early years and helping children and families feel part of their local community.

We thank our early childhood champions for the knowledge, care and commitment they bring to their work every day.

No more waiting in the wings 🎭

For nearly 100 years, the Geelong Society of Operatic and Dramatic Arts (GSODA) has helped local young people take centre stage, building confidence, creativity and community through live performance.

But being without a permanent home since 2022 has been a challenge for the volunteer-run youth theatre company, with rehearsals, programs and high-quality performances spread across multiple venues while they searched for a dedicated space.

Now, we’re helping GSODA raise the curtain on its next chapter by leasing the former Whittington Senior Citizens Hall to the much-loved community theatre group, following an open Expression of Interest process. 🏠

This new home gives GSODA the space and stability to keep nurturing the next generation of local performers, while creating more opportunities for volunteers, audiences and community theatre to thrive.

Here’s to a standing ovation for GSODA’s next act. 👏

Standing with Nepal

Our thoughts are with the people of Nepal and everyone affected by the devastating floods and landslides, including the many people still waiting for news of loved ones.

We’re standing by our local and broader Nepalese community here in Greater Geelong during this incredibly difficult time.

Over the weekend, we lit the catenary lights and Moorabool Street lights in the colours of the Nepalese flag. They’ll continue throughout this week.

Give hooded plovers a chance 🐣

Without protection, a Hooded Plover egg has just a 2.5% chance of making it to adulthood. But small actions on the beach can make a big difference. 🏖️

Last season, five Hooded Plover chicks fledged in our region. This was a great result for this threatened beach-nesting bird. 🙌

If you want to help this season, join BirdLife Australia for a free training workshop to learn how to spot beach-nesting birds, understand the threats they face and help protect them. 👀

📍 Point Lonsdale Surf Life Saving Club
📅 Friday 11 September
👉 RSVP to [email protected]

You can also stay for an afternoon workshop on communication skills for volunteers. Come to one workshop or both.

Don’t bin your v**e ♻️

253 kg of v**es were recycled through our resource recovery centres during a 12-month trial, and because the service worked, it’s here to stay.

Vapes contain batteries, plastics and chemicals that can cause fires when they end up in rubbish or recycling bins.

Instead, take your v**e to a dedicated recycling bin at our North Geelong or Drysdale resource recovery centres.

Not sure where something goes? Check our recycling guide at geelong.link/recycleguide

The countdown is on 🗳️

With just three months until the Victorian State Election, here are a couple of things you can do now to make sure you’re ready.

✅ 1. Check your enrolment details – Make sure your details are up to date with the Victorian Electoral Commission at vec.vic.gov.au.

🏙️ 2. Get behind Greater Geelong – As Victoria’s second-largest and fastest-growing region, Greater Geelong needs investment to keep pace. We’re working to secure investment in projects that would make a real difference to our region, including central Geelong, the Avalon Airport Precinct, transport connections and regional sporting infrastructure.

Get behind Greater Geelong by learning more about these projects, talking about the priorities that matter to our region and helping put us on the agenda.

Find out more about the projects we’re working to secure at geelongcity.vic.gov.au/advocacy.
