We need your help! Do you recognise this skatepark structure that looks like a repurposed drainage pipe?

Kim barne thaliyu / Geelong Heritage Centre volunteers and staff have been busy digitising, describing and uploading images from the former Corio Shire collection and have discovered these snaps featuring a curious concrete structure, possibly situated in the former City of Nunawading.

The Corio Shire collection includes photos taken at Melbourne skateparks in the 1970s that we think may have inspired Geelong’s first skatepark, the now heritage-protected Corio Bowls.

Here’s something for you in return! Enjoy exploring more skatepark imagery in the heritage archives: https://archives.grlc.vic.gov.au/corio-shire-council-historical-photographs

📸1+2 – Unidentified skatepark structure, possibly photographed in the former City of Nunawading, October 1979. Could this pipe have inspired Corio Bowls?

📸 3 – Thank you for identifying this skatepark at Doveton in the former City of Berwick. Photographed October 1979.

📸4 – Geelong’s first skatepark, Corio Bowls, Bell Park, March 1980

📸5 – Construction of ‘Ramp’, Corio Bowls, February 1980

📸 6 – Another view of the unidentified skatepark structure in Melbourne, this time showing some surrounding buildings (including a fire station?) to hopefully aid in identification, photographed in October 1979

We had some unexpected visitors at Boronggook Drysdale Library this week. 🦆

A mother duck and her ducklings were found huddled in the back alley, so our team improvised a nesting box while getting in touch with Wildlife Victoria.

By morning, Mum had disappeared and the ducklings were on the loose. Our team managed to round up the surprisingly speedy little escapees, just in time for Mum to reappear.

After a little more duck wrangling, the family was safely back together. 💛

We’re glad to have helped this little family on their way. As for library membership, that can come later. 🦆
