Yesterday, Geelong High School celebrated World Picnic Day. Students and Staff were encouraged to bring a picnic to the atrium during lunchtime to celebrate the day. A group prize award was given to the picnic judged to be the most authentic of the day. Overall a great way to start off the second last week of term.

Did you know, the world's largest organised picnic was held in Lisbon, Portugual in 2009 with over 22,000 people in attendance at the Parque de Bela Vista.

On Monday 1st of June selected year 7 and year 8 students participated in “Beat That” incursion from Biolab as part of the Victorian Challenge and Enrichment series.

During the program the students investigated the accuracy of different heart rate monitors during varying exercise levels and formed their own conclusions using primary and class data.

Geelong High School students gathered on the oval today for the running of the annual Cross Country. Students ran a lap of the Botanical Gardens in perfect conditions. Results to be posted next week. Thanks to Joel and Cameron for additional photos.

Yesterday Geelong High School marked IDAHOBIT, the International Day Against LGBTQIA+ Discrimination. It raises awareness of ongoing violence and discrimination, encouraging communities to go rainbows and foster inclusive environments. Students at GHS were invited to join a lunchtime event in our art room and try out some craft activities, including badge-making, fabric painting, nail painting and rainbow themed makeup. The event was supported by our SRC students and the Art Captain and Vice Art Captain. Thank you to all the Allies who got involved.

The 2026 School for Student Leadership (SSL) students are running a fun run for students in year levels seven to nine (7-9) and a sausage sizzle for all students at lunch on May 28th. The fun run will be a 5km run/walk around the Eastern Gardens. Gold coin donations will be collected during home group on the 28th, all students are encouraged to bring a gold coin donation on the day to go towards the cause.

The students are raising money for ‘Feed Me Geelong Foundation’, helping people dealing with food insecurity in Geelong, which is a big issue in Geelong.

In the coming weeks there will be bins placed in the front office and house office taking non-perishable food donations to go to ‘Feed Me Geelong Foundation’.

On Wednesday 13th May, Geelong High School proudly hosted the Geelong Model United Nations — a spirited interschool event that brought together 120 students from GHS, Suzanne Cory High School, Geelong Lutheran College, Bellarine Secondary College, Surf Coast Secondary College and Belmont High School. The day was led by Professor Ian Howie, an international diplomat with decades of experience representing Australia on the world stage, who served as Secretary-General across each caucus. This year's event centred on a topic of pressing global relevance: Artificial Intelligence and Sustainable Development: Harnessing the Benefits – Safeguarding Human Rights. Geelong High School's 56 students represented 14 nations, each embodying the beliefs and policies of their assigned country. Delegates opened proceedings with formal position statements before engaging in a full day of moderated and unmoderated caucuses, debating and refining a resolution on the topic. The debate was rich and at times fierce. Notable amendments focused on strengthening the resolution's language — pushing for decisive action rather than merely asking nations to "consider" measures. Privacy versus security emerged as a significant point of contention, while there was unanimous support for strong action against fake imagery. Ultimately, the resolution passed with a majority of the 31 member states of the General Assembly voting in favour of the amended document — a result that will be formally forwarded to the United Nations for consideration. A huge thank you to our GHS delegates, who attended preparation sessions over the past month and brought such dedication and intellect to an event exploring a topic that will shape our world for years to come.
