Bushfire preparation is one of those jobs that is much easier to tackle before the heat arrives 🔥

A reminder that the required fire mitigation measures need to be in place by today and maintained from 5 October through to 1 May.

The requirements differ depending on the size and type of your property, so please check the City’s current Fire Hazard Information Booklet rather than relying on last year’s checklist.

If you’re struggling to meet the deadline, the City website also has a list of local contractors who may be able to assist.

A clear, well-prepared property helps protect your home, your neighbours and the crews who may need to access the area.

That's September done and dusted, Gero 👋

This month we celebrated some local legends, recognised 50 years of the Sunshine Surf Masters, visited the Geraldton Menshed and kept the conversation going through Council.

Thanks to everyone who gave their time, shared an idea or helped make Greater Geraldton a great place to live.

I trekked out to Coronation for the Geraldton Longboard Club's final competition of 2026 - and the conditions certainly turned it on! The swell was huge, the wind stayed away and I had the pleasure of presenting the winners 🏄‍♂️

The Club recently received funding that helped purchase new banners and a much-needed portable shade structure for the judges. They may seem like simple additions, but practical support like this makes a real difference to small sporting clubs run by hardworking volunteers.

Without it, many of these committees simply couldn’t keep doing what they do.

Congratulations to all the competitors, and a big thank you to everyone behind the Geraldton Longboard Club for another fantastic year!

The Sunshine Festival is heading somewhere new this year ☀️

With Stow Gardens unavailable while the Foreshore Youth Precinct is redeveloped, the Geraldton–Greenough Sunshine Festival is moving to Maitland Park for 2026.

The location may be changing, but there’ll still be plenty of sunshine, community spirit and family fun to enjoy.

From Rover Football Club to the biggest stage in Australian footy - what a journey for Judd McVee 💜

A huge congratulations on being selected to represent the Fremantle Dockers in Saturday’s AFL Grand Final ⚓

It’s an incredible achievement and a very proud moment for his family, Rovers Football Club, the GNFL and the entire community.

All the best, Judd - Gero is right behind you!

Geraldton Menshed has been giving local men a welcoming place to work on projects, share skills and stay connected since 2009.

I recently enjoyed this look inside the shed with secretary Phil Thornton. The work is impressive, but the friendship and sense of purpose behind it are even better.

Well done to the volunteers who keep this great local organisation humming along 👏

Today I caught up with Shannan Dunn to thank him, on behalf of our community, for his part in rescuing fellow surfer Mel Ismail at Glenfield Beach earlier this week.

When Mel signalled for help following the shark attack, Shannan paddled straight out and helped bring him safely back to shore. Once on the beach, other locals rushed in to provide first aid and get Mel to the waiting ambulance.

It was an extraordinary community response in an incredibly frightening situation.

Shannan, thank you for acting without hesitation. Thank you also to everyone who stepped forward to help, and to Mel for keeping a cool head under immense pressure.

Wishing Mel all the very best for his recovery.

Fifty years of the Sunshine Surf Masters - what an achievement for a homegrown Geraldton event 🌊

The anniversary event at Flat Rocks recently brought together generations of surfers and plenty of great local stories. Events like this don't reach 50 years without passionate volunteers, competitors and supporters behind them.

If you were there, share your favourite moment below 👇
