Museum of Geraldton The Museum of Geraldton celebrates the rich heritage of the land, sea and people of the Mid West.
(1)

Community guidelines: https://visit.museum.wa.gov.au/social-media-community-guidelines The Western Australian Museum was established in 1891 and has a long and fascinating history which reflects and documents the State’s rich and diverse natural and cultural heritage. Today the Western Australian Museum is preparing the New Museum for WA, comprises five public sites and a Collections and Research

facility, and houses millions of objects from rare fossils to the iconic racing yacht Australia II. The Museum also manages 200 shipwreck sites of the 1,500 known to be located off the WA coast and manages eight Aboriginal land reserves. Due to its location on the Western Australian Coral Coast and proximity to the beautiful Abrolhos Islands with their dark history of shipwrecks, the Town and now City of Greater Geraldton has had a museum in its midst since 1971. The Museum of Geraldton overlooks the Indian Ocean and celebrates the rich heritage of the land, sea and people of the Mid West Region. Discover ancient landforms, Yamaji history and culture, and the region's natural landscapes and marine environment. Find out how more recent European exploration and settlement has developed the Mid West including the agriculture, fishing, mining and science industries. From Great Depths: Witnessing the wrecks of Sydney II and Kormoran is a poignant exhibit exploring the history of both ships and the exact moment they engage in battle off the Western Australian coast. The exhibit includes a 3D film featuring the underwater footage captured during the 2015 survey expedition to the wreck sites, along with personal accounts and historic images of wartime service related to both crews.

We are always excited to host these talks, bringing science to our beautiful community.

Last week, Dr Adele Pentland, Project Officer in Palaeontology visited the Museum of Geraldton for a public talk on Australia’s Pterosaurs. 🔬⛏️Globally, pterosaur fossils are exceptionally rare compared with dinosaurs and marine reptiles, making every discovery incredibly important. Thanks, Adele, for your presentation at this sold-out event, This research was made possible by Woodside Energy the WA Museum and the Foundation for the WA Museum.

🪃 Today wraps up NAIDOC Week 2026, Fifty Years of Deadly, but the celebrations are far from over!

Head to the Museum of Geraldton for a range of activities and events inspired by our latest exhibition, Cosmic Echoes: A Shared Sky. On display until Sunday 6 September 2026, Cosmic Echoes brings together modern science and ancient wisdom through art. Featuring creative pieces by Australian and South African Indigenous artists, the exhibition celebrates the traditional lands on which SKAO's SKA-Low and SKA-Mid next-generation radio telescopes are situated, and the starry skies toward which they gaze!

🎨 Sneak peak...

This post features work by Wajarri artists Carlleen Dingo and Mauretta Drage, who you might've met at one of our Meet the Artist activities!

Mauretta's piece—a kaleidoscope of blue and green—is titled Emu Eggs Nesting. Carlleen's piece is titled Little Things Grow, and is one part of a larger triptych piece. The Museum of Geraldton is grateful to host this important art exhibition, developed by SKA Observatory in collaboration with CSIRO, The Wajarri Community Office, and South African Radio Astronomy Observatory - SARAO.

Thank you for celebrating NAIDOC Week with us! Until next year 👋
