Another Maiden Voyage to Geraldton!

Last week we welcomed the MV Qadris Benefit on its first visit to the Port of Geraldton.

To mark the occasion, our Marine Pilot Warren joined the vessel's Master and crew for a traditional maiden voyage plaque exchange.

The vessel called at Berth 6 to discharge fertiliser before continuing its journey further down the coast.

We thank the crew for their visit and look forward to welcoming the MV Qadris Benefit back to Geraldton in the future. ⚓

Supporting the health and wellbeing of our people is a top priority at Mid West Ports and Men’s Health Week was celebrated around the workplace with bright and early BBQ breakfasts!

This year's theme highlights '101 reasons to see your GP', encouraging men and boys to get a check-up and address warning signs early, with research showing men are more likely to delay visiting a GP and face significantly higher rates of chronic disease and preventable illness than women.

These events provide a valuable opportunity for men across our workplace to forge new friendships and talk about health. Thank you to everyone who took part and helped make the week a success!

Mid West Ports is undergoing exciting development, as the WA Government invests $350 million towards our Port Maximisation Project (PMaxP), which is designed to ensure the Geraldton Port can meet future demands of our growing region.

The early phase of works involves maintenance dredging, which is essential for the future construction of a new berth.

Careful planning has been undertaken to minimise the impact of moving accumulated sediment to protect water quality in and around the port, however, there will be some locations around the port area where water clarity may be temporarily affected.

Mid West Ports has a robust water quality monitoring program to ensure water quality remains within safe limits for people and local marine habitats.

Works are expected to commence in late June and continue for 3-4 weeks.

More than 30 locals attended our Community Information Session held last night at the Geraldton Yacht Club to learn more about our Port Maximisation Project (PMaxP), which will deliver new infrastructure, support trade diversification and tourism growth, and boost local jobs and business opportunities.

Chief Executive Officer Damian Tully, together with our in-house experts, explained our construction schedule, which includes robust environmental management planning to protect local marine habitats and coastal processes.

The WA Government has invested $350 million into PMaxP to ensure Geraldton continues to play a key role in Western Australia’s vibrant trade and tourism industries. Our next community session will take place 2 July 2026. To learn more, visit https://bit.ly/4uPCdEu

The Port of Geraldton, operated by Mid West Ports, has been the region’s major seaport since 1840, when the first ship, the HMS Champion, anchored off our coast.

Since then, the Port has grown exponentially, employing Western Australians with expertise in engineering, environmental science, trades, and many others.

Iron ore remains one of our most important export commodities, and a major contributor to our state’s prosperity. This image shows the first shipment of iron ore being readied for export in 1966.

Our Not-for-Profit Partners, the Geraldton Tree Canopy Advocates, have been busy lately, making the most of the cooler weather, planting trees across the community to help create more shade, cooler streets and healthier habitats for local wildlife.

Recently, three new Casuarinas were planted along the Geraldton Foreshore as part of the Gero Tree Festival, while another 11 trees found a new home at the Brigades Football Club to help provide shade for players, members and families.

The Geraldton Tree Canopy Advocates are a passionate group of volunteers dedicated to improving Geraldton's liveability through tree planting, community education and environmental stewardship.

We're proud to support the important work they do in helping create a greener, cooler and more sustainable Mid West community.

Ever wondered just how big a bulk carrier engine is? 🚢

This photo was taken onboard the MV Transcenden Wisdom during its recent visit to the Port of Geraldton. The vessel measures an impressive 229 metres long and 32 metres wide and was here loading iron ore for export to China.

What you're looking at is the top section of the ship's main engine with a crew member in orange standing beside it for scale.

It's a reminder of the incredible engineering that powers global trade and the enormous vessels that regularly visit the Port of Geraldton. Sometimes photos really do put things into perspective!

This week's takes us to the Geraldton Fishing Boat Harbour in the 1970s, as the carrier vessel William F Burton returned from the Abrolhos Islands.

In the background sits the Port of Geraldton, where iron ore stockpiles can be seen awaiting export through Berth 4. At the time, ore was commonly stored in open stockpiles close to the waterfront before being loaded onto ships.

Just a few years after this photo was taken, the export facility was recommissioned following the closure of Western Mining Corporation's Koolanooka mine, first handling talc and later supporting the export of mineral sands from the Eneabba region.

A fascinating snapshot of how both the Port and the Mid West's export industries have evolved over the decades.
