Gerringong Rural Fire Brigade

Gerringong Rural Fire Brigade This page is run by operational members of the Gerringong Rural Fire Brigade and is not monitored 24/7. Please report all emergencies to 000.

For non-urgent enquiries, please contact the Albion Park Fire Control Centre 02 4230 8200. The Gerringong Rural Fire Brigade was formed in 1948 to protect and serve the Gerringong, Gerroa and Werri Beach communities. The Brigade is currently comprised of about 30 operational volunteers, both men and women. We are always interested in welcoming new members. To join the brigade, it involves filling

out some paperwork, a background check, and undertaking an interview. Upon acceptance, you begin basic training. This involves learning about fire behaviour, the equipment we carry, methods of firefighting, safety, and teamwork. There are currently no fitness standards. Young people aged 16 and 17 will require parental consent. 🔥 Beach Fire – Gerroa 🔥

Gerringong RFB attended a beach fire in Gerroa this morning after some logs were found smouldering on the beach. Crews worked to extinguish the logs, but it’s an important reminder for our community.

Please do not light fires on our beaches.
Here’s why:

• It’s illegal under local regulations.
• Hot sand can cause serious burns — buried embers superheat the sand and can injure children, pets, and anyone walking through the area.
• With hot, windy conditions forecast, even a small fire can reignite and threaten nearby dunes and vegetation.

☎️ If you see an unattended fire, call Triple Zero (000) immediately.

Thank you to our volunteers for keeping our community safe.

🚒 Bush Alight - Jamberoo 🔥

This afternoon our crew responded to a fire that started during bush‑regeneration land clearing activities. Firefighters worked through thick lantana to access the area extinguishing multiple fires.

NSW Rural Fire Service crews from Gerringong, Jamberoo Rural Fire Service and Dunmore Rural Fire Brigade worked together to access and extinguish the fires. A solid team effort from all brigades to bring the incident under control.

Thank you to our volunteers for their continued commitment to keeping the community safe.

With warm and windy conditions ahead, landholders are reminded to review their planned activities and report all unattended fires to 000 immediately. Have you downloaded the Hazards Near Me App? Download it today so you know when a fire starts near you.

🔥 Community Education with Rotary & Probus Gerringong

Over recent weeks, Gerringong RFB delivered community education talks to both the Rotary Club of Gerringong and Probus Gerringong, sharing important information on local fire preparedness, brigade operations, and how our volunteers support the community year‑round.

A special moment during the Probus session came when we learned that three of their members are either current or former NSW Rural Fire Service volunteers — a great reminder of how deeply connected our community is to the work of the Rural Fire Service.

We thank both Rotary and Probus for the warm welcome, the thoughtful questions, and their ongoing support of our brigade. Strong community partnerships like these help keep Gerringong safer and more resilient.

Want to find out more about our brigade? Come on down to our Open Day on Sat 19 Sep from 10am to 2pm.

🔥 Preparing for Summer – Gerringong Member Achievements 🔥

Our brigade is getting ready for the upcoming fire season, and our volunteers have been strengthening their skills through training. Did you know that the NSW Rural Fire Service is a Registered Training Organisation and provides nationally recognised qualifications?

At a recent General Meeting, the following members were presented with qualifications to recognise their efforts:

• Advanced Firefighter – Sandra Lightfoot & Craig Keller
• Hydraulics – Sandra Lightfoot
• Advanced Resuscitation Techniques – Claudia Steiner
• Firefighter 1 and 2 – Mick Staplevan

We were also proud to present Sandra Lightfoot with the NSW Premier’s Flood Emergency Citation for her service during major flood events across the Greater Sydney Area during the period 2021–23 — a reminder of the dedication volunteers bring to every emergency.

Whilst our team of volunteers are preparing for the upcoming season, we also want our community to prepare. You can find out more by attending our Open Day and Get Ready Weekend on Sat 19 Sep between 10-2 at our station in Blackwood St.

A huge thank you to Community Bank Oak Flats and Gerringong for their generous $3,000 donation to our brigade!

This support directly strengthens our ability to train, equip, and prepare our volunteers for the emergencies our community faces each year.

Your contribution helps us continue delivering training, maintain essential equipment, and ensure our members are ready when the call comes. We’re grateful for your ongoing commitment to our local community and to the work we do.

We maintain a close working relationship with our Community Bank and welcomed the team to our recent General Meeting to say thanks!

👏 Thank you, Bendigo Bank — your support makes a real difference.
