🚒 Training Night at Gisborne CFA 🚒

Last night, members preparing to attend an upcoming structural firefighting course practised a range of important firefighting techniques, including:
💧 Supplying water to fire trucks from external sources
🚒 Changing over water supplies between tankers
🧯 Deploying and managing fire hoses quickly and efficiently

At the same time, other members headed out into the community to familiarise themselves with new housing developments and the locations of fire hydrants. Understanding how local streets are laid out and knowing where water supplies are located helps crews respond more effectively when every second counts.

Training nights are an important part of maintaining our skills, improving our knowledge of the local area, and ensuring we’re ready to respond when our community needs us.

Today, members of Gisborne CFA joined volunteers from brigades across Victoria at the Bendigo rally to stand up for the future of volunteer firefighting.

It was encouraging to see such strong support, not only from CFA members but also from members of the wider community who understand the vital role volunteers play in keeping their communities safe.

The message from today was clear: volunteers deserve to see investment where it matters most.

As Victorians continue to pay more through the Emergency Services and Volunteers Fund (ESVF), many volunteers and community members are asking why frontline brigades are still waiting for the equipment and facilities they need.

Across the state, some brigades are still responding in trucks that are more than 30 years old. Others continue to operate from stations with limited facilities, including a lack of appropriate amenities for all members.

When brigades are responding in ageing appliances and some stations still lack adequate facilities, volunteers are asking where the increased revenue from the ESVF is being invested.

Volunteers give their time freely to protect their communities. They deserve modern equipment, safe facilities, and investment that directly supports frontline emergency services.

The growing groundswell of support shown today demonstrates that this conversation is not going away. As we move towards the State Election, further rallies and advocacy efforts are expected as volunteers and communities continue to call for greater transparency and investment in the CFA.

Tomorrow, a number of Gisborne CFA members will be attending the “Scrap the Tax” Rally in Bendigo to stand alongside volunteers, farmers and community members calling for fair funding for emergency services and regional communities.

The rally is being organised by the CFA Volunteers Group and will be held at Tom Flood Sports Oval, Bendigo, from 10:00am, with proceedings commencing at 11:00am.

This is an opportunity for CFA volunteers and supporters to come together, have their voices heard, and show support for the people and communities who rely on volunteer emergency services.

🍳 Kitchen Fire Safety Starts at Home

As the weather gets colder around Gisborne and more of us are cooking warm meals at home, it’s a timely reminder that the kitchen remains the most common place for house fires to start.

A moment of distraction can quickly turn into an emergency, so staying alert while cooking is one of the simplest ways to keep your household safe.

🔥 Before heading out or turning in for the night, double-check your appliances

Make sure your stove, cooktop, oven, air fryer and other heat-producing appliances are switched off.

🔥 Never use water on a cooking oil or grease fire

Water can cause the fire to spread rapidly and put you at serious risk of injury. If safe to do so, use a fire blanket or the correct type of fire extinguisher.

🔥 Keep children safe in the kitchen

Hot surfaces, boiling liquids and cooking appliances can all pose a risk. Always supervise children and keep them well clear of cooking areas.

🔥 Have the right equipment nearby

A fire blanket and suitable fire extinguisher should be easily accessible in every kitchen. Just as importantly, make sure everyone in the household knows how to use them.

Working smoke alarms, safe cooking habits and a little extra vigilance can make all the difference when it comes to preventing a house fire.

When local brigades lose income, it’s not just a contract that’s lost. It’s funding that helps support equipment, training, station improvements and services for our communities.

What better way to celebrate Thank a First Responder Day than spending time with some future firefighters?

Today we visited the fantastic children at Gumboots Early Learning Gisborne for a special show-and-tell session. The kids had the chance to see our truck up close, meet some of our members, and learn a little about fire safety, including the important message of Stop, Drop and Roll.

Thank you to Gumboots Early Learning for having us. We had just as much fun as the kids did!

Women supporting women in CFA 👩‍🚒

Over the weekend, two of our members attended the CFA Women’s Challenge Camp at Tylden, joining volunteers from across the region for a weekend of learning, teamwork, personal challenge and connection.

They returned with new skills, new friendships and plenty of positive stories, describing it as a fantastic experience filled with great people and lots of fun.

Programs like this provide opportunities for women in CFA to build confidence, develop leadership skills and strengthen the networks that support our volunteers both on and off the fireground.

We’re proud to see our members embracing these opportunities and bringing their experiences back to our brigade. 💛❤️

As temperatures drop and we spend more time indoors, today’s Smoke Alarm Action Day is a timely reminder that working smoke alarms save lives.

Winter often means fireplaces are lit, heaters are switched on, and we look for ways to keep our homes warm and comfortable. It’s also the time of year when the risk of home fires can increase.

Take a few moments today to test your smoke alarms and make sure they’re working properly. A functioning smoke alarm provides early warning and can make all the difference in an emergency.

As we settle into the colder months, remember to:
🔥 Keep heaters and fireplaces clear of clothing, furniture and other combustible materials.
🔥 Never leave open fires unattended.
🔥 Be cautious when drying clothes indoors. While they may take longer to dry during winter, placing them too close to heaters or fireplaces can create a serious fire risk.

A few simple checks and safe habits can help keep you, your family and our community safe this winter.
