As temperatures drop and we spend more time indoors, today’s Smoke Alarm Action Day is a timely reminder that working smoke alarms save lives.

Winter often means fireplaces are lit, heaters are switched on, and we look for ways to keep our homes warm and comfortable. It’s also the time of year when the risk of home fires can increase.

Take a few moments today to test your smoke alarms and make sure they’re working properly. A functioning smoke alarm provides early warning and can make all the difference in an emergency.

As we settle into the colder months, remember to:
🔥 Keep heaters and fireplaces clear of clothing, furniture and other combustible materials.
🔥 Never leave open fires unattended.
🔥 Be cautious when drying clothes indoors. While they may take longer to dry during winter, placing them too close to heaters or fireplaces can create a serious fire risk.

A few simple checks and safe habits can help keep you, your family and our community safe this winter.

Stay warm, stay safe, and check your smoke alarms today. ❄️

🚨 Smoke Alarm Action Day 🚨

This Monday, 1 June, is Smoke Alarm Action Day, a nationwide initiative supported by fire services across Australia to remind everyone of one simple message: working smoke alarms save lives.

Smoke alarms provide critical early warning in a fire, especially at night when you may not smell smoke while asleep. Taking a few minutes to check your alarms could make all the difference for you and your family.

✔️ Test your smoke alarms
✔️ Replace batteries if needed
✔️ Replace smoke alarms older than 10 years
✔️ Make sure you have alarms installed in the right locations throughout your home

Smoke Alarm Action Day is now an annual reminder for all Australians to take action and help keep their households safe.

Don’t wait until it’s too late. Check your smoke alarms this Monday and make sure they’re ready when you need them!

🚨 SUPPORT LOCAL FARMERS & RURAL COMMUNITIES 🚨

Many people across Victoria are taking a closer look at policies and decisions that directly impact regional communities and farming families.

The Emergency Services Levy has resulted in significant cost increases for many Victorian farmers and rural property owners, with concerns being raised across the state about the financial pressure it places on farming families and local communities.

Farmers are a vital part of our region and play an important role in supporting CFA brigades and emergency response efforts across Victoria.

To help raise awareness and encourage informed conversations within the community, we have a limited number of “Scrap the Tax” signs available for local businesses willing to display one in their business or shop window.

If your business would like to display a sign, please send us a private message to arrange collection.

Please note: numbers are limited and available while stocks last.

😴💤 You can’t smell smoke when you’re asleep.

Smoke alarms save lives, but only if they’re working and placed correctly.

As we head into the cooler months, now is the perfect time to check your smoke alarms and make sure your home is protected.

All smoke alarms in your home should be interconnected. This means if a fire starts anywhere in the house, every alarm will sound, giving everyone the best possible chance to wake up and get out safely.

✅ Test your smoke alarms regularly
✅ Replace batteries if needed (or replace the unit if it’s old)
✅ Make sure alarms are installed in hallways and near bedrooms
✅ Consider upgrading to interconnected smoke alarms for maximum protection

A working smoke alarm can mean the difference between life and death.

Check them today. It could save a life. ❤️🚨

So proud to see Gisborne CFA represented at the Good Friday Appeal thank you event, celebrating 75 years of partnership between CFA and The Royal Children’s Hospital ❤️

A huge thank you to our volunteers and community members who donated, fundraised and supported this year’s Appeal. Together, CFA brigades and local communities across Victoria helped raise an incredible $2.15 million for the kids.

We’re proud to play a small part in such an important cause. 💜

🚐🔥 Caravan fire simulation at training last night

Our crews worked through a fast-moving scenario in breathing apparatus, focusing on clear communication, quick decision-making, and getting water on the fire efficiently. Multiple hose lines were deployed as teams worked to contain the fire and protect surrounding areas.

Training like this helps ensure we’re ready to respond quickly and safely if something similar happens in our local community. 🚒💪

💛 National Volunteer Week | It’s Your Year to Volunteer 💛

This week we’re celebrating National Volunteer Week and recognising the volunteers who help keep our communities strong.

Since January, more than 3,400 Victorians have joined CFA, wanting to find purpose, build connections, and make a real difference. And we see that same spirit right here in Gisborne.

Our CFA and SES volunteers, along with volunteers across sporting clubs, schools, community groups and charities, give their time selflessly to support others, often balancing family, work and everyday life while still showing up when it matters most.

CFA volunteers are the backbone of Victoria’s emergency response, and this week we want to say a huge thank you to every volunteer in our town and across the state.

And if you’ve ever thought about volunteering, this could be your sign…

✨ It’s your year to volunteer. ✨

🔥 Fireplace Safety Leading Into Winter 🔥

As the colder months start to creep in, many of us will begin lighting up the fireplace to keep warm. There’s nothing better than the comfort of an open fire, but it’s important to make sure it’s being used safely.

To help keep your family and home safe as we head into winter:

✅ Always use a fire screen in front of an open fire
✅ Keep anything that can burn at least 1 metre away (clothes horses, furniture, curtains, rugs, kids’ toys)
✅ Extinguish open fires completely before leaving home or going to sleep
✅ Always supervise children and pets near open fires
✅ Make sure ashes are fully cold before disposing of them (ashes can stay hot for days)
✅ Only burn dry, clean wood to reduce smoke and creosote build-up

A little preparation goes a long way in preventing house fires. Stay warm, stay safe, and enjoy the cooler season responsibly. ❤️🔥

Bit of a fun competition at training tonight! 🚒💪

We ran through draughting set ups and a hose bowling comp across all three of our appliances. The focus was on tightening up our timing with each set up, making sure we started strong with a clear crew briefing, task allocation, and good communication from start to finish.

It was a great way to sharpen our skills under a bit of pressure, while still keeping it fun and team-focused. Friendly competition is such a great way to train, it pushes everyone to work smarter, faster, and more efficiently, while still having a laugh along the way.

Great effort from everyone involved! 👏🔥
