Santa has confirmed HHL SES members are on his NICE list this year.

As well as supporting the Hunters Hill community the year, our volunteers have been active across the greater Sydney area responding to storms and floods this year. Additionally, our members have travelled further afield to assist regional communities impacted by severe weather events that have hit the state this year, including Taree and the mid North Coast, Far Western NSW and the Hunter Region.

While the current weather outlook is for a pleasant Christmas day, Santa is reminding everyone that NSW will continue to be impacted by severe storms and weather systems throughout summer, so remember to monitor conditions and steer your sleigh clear of floodwaters.

If you are travelling these holidays, remember to download the Hazards Near Me app and the Live Traffic app, to support a safe and smooth journey.

Our volunteers have been active since Wednesday, working both locally and across western Sydney in response to damaging storms. Our teams have been busy undertaking repairs, making properties safe and cleaning storm debris.

Recent storm activity across the state are a reminder of the need to be prepared and aware this storm season by:

- Fixing any damage to your roof including broken or missing tiles and any leaks.
- Trimming trees and branches that could potentially fall on your home or property.
- Securing or putting away items that could blow around in strong winds.

Strong winds can pick up and throw around outdoor furniture, trampolines and roofing, causing damage to windows, roofs and cars.

A huge thank you to everyone who stopped by our stand at Moocooboola festival today!

It was wonderful to meet so many friendly faces and see the incredible support for our SES volunteers. Your encouragement means the world to the people who give their time, skills, and energy to help keep our community safe. 🧡

Our volunteers were busy not only connecting with the community but also sharing important tips on storm safety, flood preparedness, and how to stay safe during severe weather.

Congratulations to 7 members of Hunters Hill and Ryde units who this week successfully completed their chainsaw cross cut assessments after a period of extensive training. This is a key skill for supporting the community in response to storm events and significantly builds capability in the local area.

Storm season falls between September and April, when there is a greater chance for storms in NSW. Are you storm ready?

Having a plan will help you prepare, respond and recover better from storms. Have a discussion with your family, friends and neighbours about what you will do if there is a storm.

· Maintain your yard and balcony. Secure or store items that could blow around in strong winds

· Fix any damage to your roof, including broken or missing tiles and any leaks.

· Clean your gutters, downpipes and drains regularly to prevent blockages.

· Trim trees and branches that could potentially fall on your home or property

For emergency help in floods and storms call the SES on 132 500.

Recently we were invited to Hunters Hill Scout hall, where we met with Scouts from Boronia Park, Lane Cove and Hunters Hill Scout groups to talk about storm safety, flood awareness and the role of the SES.

This was a great opportunity to support the scouts on their quest to achieve their SES badge, with some fun activities that showed how to divert water with sandbags and some skills to keep safe around floodwater.

We look forward to seeing how the scouts progress towards achieving their badge!

This weekend, Hunters Hill hosted a Local Multi agency Rescue exercise in the area around Gladesville Hospital and Bedlam Bay.

SNARE25 provided the opportunity to work with partner agencies such as NSW Police, Fire and Rescue NSW, NSW Ambulance Service and Marine Rescue, as well as Local Emergency Management teams in responding to a simulated emergency scenario.

Exercises such as these provide the opportunity to evaluate the effectiveness of working across agencies in providing an emergency response, to identify team strengths and opportunities to further improve our rescue capabilities.

Hunters Hill SES volunteers joined over 800 emergency service personnel taking part in a mass flood rescue readiness exercise organised by the SES on major river systems across the state last weekend.

“Who Let The Boats Out” involved participation from nine emergency services, uniting to share expertise and capabilities and further enhance flood rescue response in communities across NSW. The event was designed to strengthen core skills for on-water flood rescue and flood support operations, as well as improve coordination and communication between emergency services organisations.

Flood rescue operations is one of many pathways you can become involved in as an SES volunteer. If you are interested in Volunteering with the NSW SES, contact the volunteer help line 1800 201 000 or visit our unit at Plunkett St (off Punt Road), Monday Nights at 18:30 to have a chat.

It's early in the new year, but our volunteers are already out training and developing their skills to deliver flood rescue, support and resupply functions.
As well as gaining familiarity with various vessels, our team worked on essential skills such as navigation, night operations and retrieving a casualty.
Flood boat operations is one of the many pathways our SES members can undertake to keep our communities safe.
If you are planning a road trip this January, download the Hazards Near Me app, and set up watch zones for your destinations to stay informed of potential flood and storm risks.
