Reconciliation Week is about strengthening the relationship between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and non-Indigenous peoples to create unity and respect across Australia.

The NRW theme 'all in', reinforces that reconciliation is an active responsibility - one that belongs to every one of us.

The Benevolent Society is committed to ongoing change as we embed culturally informed practice, uphold self‑determination, and deepen our relationships with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities across our services, systems, leadership and policy work.

This year we mark a significant milestone in our responsibility to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities with our first Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Strategy. This Strategy reflects the collective insight, reflection, and commitment of many people within and beyond our organisation. As an organisation we recognise that reconciliation alone is not enough. This Strategy establishes our first organisation-wide commitment to lift ambition and strengthen the way we work so we can contribute to better outcomes for the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities we serve. 🖤💛❤️

Today we reflect and acknowledge the mistreatment of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and pay our respects to those who were forcibly removed from their families under policies of assimilation and displacement.

We recognise the ongoing impact caused and together, commit to creating a future grounded in justice, peace and healing.

How you can contribute:
🖤 Attend community events or memorial ceremonies
💛Listen to survivor stories + hold moments of silence
❤️Engage in education about the history

Together we can take collective action to ensure such injustices are never repeated. For more information about National Sorry Day, visit the link below.

National Volunteer Week (18-24 May) celebrates the ongoing efforts of volunteers who make an impact within our communities. ❤️

Benevolent's Home Visiting Program based in Queensland is run by 15 volunteers who provide connection and support to local families. One of the volunteers is 70 year old Sue, who supports a mother of twins, Kat. 👩‍👧‍👧

🌱 Volunteer Coordinator Cassie has been leading the service for 7 years and says that volunteers play a vital role in the program.

"I cannot put enough emphasis on what it means for families to receive this support and feel seen and heard. It gives me goosebumps just thinking about how imperative our volunteers are to the continued success of this program."

🌱International Day of Families recognises families being a fundamental unit within the communities we live in. At The Benevolent Society we believe that all families are different and can sometimes face complexities.

The Intensive Family support program work with families over a 6-9 month period, offering in-home and case management support. Team leader Ashleigh says the biggest priority is understanding their needs and providing options so they feel connected to networks in their local community. Another focus is advocating for children whose voices sometimes can be overlooked. 👪

"Sometimes children can be misinterpreted so we like to provide that voice for them and capture that when we are working alongside the parents to see where gaps may be."

There are currently 3 million carers in Australia providing an estimated 2.2 billion hours of unpaid care each year. For carers, social connections are an important part of their support system to ensure they can also priortise their health and wellness. The Benevolent Society's Carer Gateway team deliver this assistance through peer support groups where carers can meet, discuss their experiences and share advice.

Joshua joined Benevolent's Carer Gateway team as a Peer Support Coodinator in May 2024 and curates peer support sessions to ensure every caring community feels genuinely comfortable and has opportunities for connection. 🌻

"We shape our approach to match what each group responds to best which means our programs constantly evolve as we try new things."

Signs of abuse aren't always obvious. They can be hidden or difficult to identify.

This is why The Shark Cage Program exists - a free 8 week program that is designed to assist individuals in understanding and recognising the signs of domestic and family abuse and coercive control.

Starting on May 7, this program is delivered in a welcoming and empowering environment that fosters a sense of community, safety and connection.

May is Domestic and Family Violence and Prevention Month, a time to pause and reflect on an issue that continues to affect far too many people in our communities.

Domestic and family violence (DFV), is not always obvious or visible. It can be emotional manipulation, controlling behaviour, financial restriction, isolation and or threats. These patterns often build slowly, becoming a web that is hard to see from the outside world.

Across The Benevolent Society, many of our teams support families impacted by domestic violence every day. Our Centre for Women, Children and Family Health provide counselling, family therapy, psycho-education, and case management. Programs like Staying Home Leaving Violence and Foundations for Young Parents support to create safer and more stable futures for themselves and their children.

Child Youth and Family Manager Roweena, speaks of the realities many women and families face, and the care and commitment our teams bring to support them.

Not every disability is visible. 🌻

April is Autism Understanding Month, a time to build real understanding, reduce stigma, and celebrate neurodivergent people in all their strengths.

That's why we're proud to be part of the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower Program, an internationally recognised initiative where wearing a sunflower lanyard or pin is a simple, discreet way for people to signal they may need a little extra time, patience or support.

Our team member Tegan, an Early Childhood Teacher, shares how wearing the Sunflower lanyard has given them confidence in public spaces and how its created practical way to communicate their needs when words are hard to find. "It makes me so proud of the team I work with." 💛

This April, let's make inclusion more than a word.
