🏳️‍🌈 Wear It Purple Day is dedicated to fostering safe, supportive and empowering environments for LGBTQIA+ young people.

This year's theme 'Colours of Courage' focuses on courage not just expressed in big moments, but in everyday choices - to live proudly and to invite others into understanding, acceptance and celebration.

Founded in 2010, in Australia in response to the harm and exclusion experienced by LGBTQIA+ young people, this day connects directly to the work we do with children, young people, families and communities at The Benevolent Society. For many young people - particularly those living in rural and regional communities - feeling accepted and supported can make a meaningful difference. It also aligns with our 2025-2028 Strategic Plan - our commitment to build inclusive and connected communities.

Before Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library reached children across Australia, there was Archie.

Four year old Archie from Acacia Ridge was the first child in Australia to sign up to the Imagination Library through The Benevolent Society’s Early Years Centre.

His first book? Where’s the Green Sheep?

Soon, a new book was arriving every month and reading together became part of Archie and his mum Debbie’s nightly routine. Archie’s story is a special part of our history.

The Benevolent Society helped bring Dolly’s big idea to families in Queensland, giving children books of their own and parents another way to connect, talk, learn and read together.

And there was one pretty unforgettable perk for Australia’s first Imagination Library kid: Archie and Debbie got to meet Dolly herself. A small Queensland connection to an extraordinary global legacy, and one we’re very proud to have been part of.

Rest in peace, Dolly. 🦋✨ Your stories will keep being read.

Every community knows its children best. When local people are trusted to lead and given the flexibility to respond to local needs, meaningful change can happen 🤝.

That's what the Safer Children, Safer Communities program set out to do - delivered by local organisations in Condobolin, Caboolture and Port Augusta, and supported by The Benevolent Society and funded by Westpac.

An independent evaluation found these community-led approaches made a real difference - in one community, school attendance rose from as low as 11-20% to 96% within just a few months ❤️.

"Children's safety and wellbeing are strengthened when communities are trusted to design responses that reflect local strengths, cultural knowledge and lived experience." - Linda Griffiths, Executive Director, Child, Youth & Family.

Fostering Young Lives is The Benevolent Society's foster care program, connecting children and young people who cannot live safely at home with caring, supportive foster families across Sydney.

Foster carers David and Benjamin were recently recognised with the 2026 Carer Recognition Awards' Embracing Cultural Belonging - CALD Award 🏆, celebrating carers who honour culture and nurture identity.

Nominated by their caseworker Shannon Woodhead, David and Ben were recognised at NSW Parliament House on Wednesday 5 August for creating a culturally safe, inclusive home - one that reflects the power of foster care to build not just stability, but genuine belonging ❤️.

🎈Today is Aged Care Employee Day - honouring the dedication of aged care workers in Australia.

At Benevolent we have over 150 staff working across our Aged Care services and Care Finder teams including Hana (pictured).

The Care Connector program helps older people find and gain access to aged care services within their local community. We spoke with Hana who explained that her role as Care Connector doesn't end once a service provider engages with a client.

"We continue to advocate on our client's behalf to ensure they are receiving the right services for them, to make sure they are happy with the quality of the service, and to answer any questions".

Today, on Aged Care Employee Day, we want to sincerely thank Hana and all of our aged care workers at The Benevolent Society for the difference they make in the lives of older Australians, today and every day. 💐
