Permits now required
The Fire Permit Period for all of Tasmania will start tomorrow (Tuesday, 16 December 2025) – this means from 2am Fire Permits will be required across the state until the end of the 2025-26 bushfire season.
If you have a property and you wish to conduct a burn (larger than 1 cubic metre in size) on your property, you will need to apply for a free Fire Permit, by submitting an application online at www.fire.tas.gov.au or free-call 1800 000 699.
During a Fire Permit Period:
• People intending to light a fire for burning vegetation or for a similar purpose must obtain a permit.
• People intending to light a fire at a sawmill or factory for burning wood waste or other flammable material must obtain a permit.
• People intending to light a fire for cooking, warmth or disposal of garden waste do not require a permit provided that:
• The fire is not lit in peat, humus or marram grass.
• The fire is attended by a responsible adult at all times until it is extinguished.
• All flammable material is removed for at least three metres radius from the fire.
• It is less than one cubic metre in size.
Remember:
• All fires lit in the open at any time of the year should be registered with the Tasmania Fire Service online via www.fire.tas.gov.au or free-call 1800 000 699.
• Some Local Government authorities prohibit backyard burning in residential areas.
• Fire may only be lit with the authority of the landowner.
• Fires must not be allowed to spread to neighbouring property.
• Neighbours should be informed of an intention to light a fire.
