Happy Mothers Day ❤️

This Mother’s Day, we celebrate the strength, dedication and compassion of mums everywhere, but especially those in our family.

Across the state, thousands of mothers, grandmothers, mothers-in-law, stepmothers and aunties give their time to help protect their communities. Whether they're on the frontline or supporting behind the scenes their contributions are extraordinary.

Today, we thank them for all they do, not just as RFS members, but as leaders and role models in our brigades and communities.

Last night we held our Annual General Meeting.

Congratulations to all who took on a role.

It was also an opportunity for some of our members to be presented with NSW Premier’s Flood Citations for their work during the 2022 and 2023 floods across NSW.

The brigade also presented Jacky with Life Membership following more than twenty years of diligent service to the brigade.

Today, May 4th, is recognised as International Firefighters Day. More historically the day is known as St Florian’s Day after St Florian, the Patron Saint of Firefighters.

St. Florian was from Rome circa 300AD and was said to be one of the first firefighters of his battalion. He legendarily saved an entire town with one bucket of water.

Today we remember those firefighters who have given their lives whilst undertaking their duties.

On the first Sunday in May at noon local time, fire stations around the world sound off their fire sirens for 30 seconds followed by a minute’s silence in memory of, and respect for, all firefighters who have been lost in the line of duty or passed on before us.

Last weekend the brigade committed crews over three shifts to the Bannerman Hazard Reduction. 🔥

Crews both worked from our trucks and in arduous conditions.

It was a great opportunity for some of our newer members to put their newly learnt skills into practice.

You might have seen some smoke around over the past few days.

The current weather conditions are ideal for hazard reduction burns.

Check out the video below to learn more about hazard reduction burns and why we do them.

They shall grow not old,
As we that are left grow old.
Age shall not weary them,
Nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning,
We will remember them.

Lest We Forget.

BANNERMAN ROAD HAZARD REDUCTION

Just letting the residents in the Annangrove, Kenthurst, Kellyville and Glenhaven areas know that there is a planned hazard reduction burn taking place on Sunday 26th and Monday 27th April.

Smoke will be present across Sunday and Monday in the area.

Crews have been preparing this burn for some time now and will be taking advantage of the favourable conditions over the weekend.

There will be Contraflow traffic for a period on Bannerman Road on Sunday so please factor this in if you are going somewhere, and please slowdown in the burning area.

Key actions include:
✅ Keep doors and windows closed to prevent smoke entering homes
✅ Keep outdoor furniture under cover to prevent ember burns
✅ Retract pool covers to prevent ember damage
✅ Remove washing from clotheslines
Ensure pets have a protected area
✅ Vehicles must slow down, keep windows up, turn headlights on
✅ Sightseers must keep away from burns for their own safety
✅ If you have asthma or a lung condition, reduce outdoor activities if smoke levels are high and if shortness of breath or coughing develops, take your reliever medicine or seek medical advice

For health information relating to smoke from bush fires and hazard reduction burning, visit the NSW Health website or Asthma Australia.

Recently Kellyville Rural Fire Brigade and Glenhaven Brigade ran a joint training exercise on electrical vehicle fires and hazards.

Firefighters explored a range of different hybrid and battery electric vehicle types, and practiced different techniques, and tactics.

It was a good exercise to ensure our members' skills keep up with the latest technology.

Last weekend we crewed a number of trucks over multiple shifts for the Paull’s Hazard Reduction at South Maroota.

Hazard reduction is just one way of preparing for bush fires – it doesn't remove the threat of fire, and it doesn't remove the need for you and your family to be prepared.

There are different types of hazard reduction including controlled burning, mechanical clearing like slashing undergrowth, or even reducing the ground fuel by hand.
