Smoke in the Air – Be Aware 🚜🔥

Agricultural burn permits will start to be issued from tomorrow, Tuesday 10th March. Residents may notice smoke in the area as landholders take advantage of the conditions to conduct permitted burns.

It’s important to note; Fire restrictions are STILL IN FORCE in our local area and these agricultural burns are undertaken through strict permit conditions; to put it simply; No permit = No Burning! 🚫

We're looking down the barrel of some pretty serious Fire Weather this week as well as heatwave conditions. It’s time to talk about your Bushfire Survival Plan.

🚗 Leaving early is the safest option to protect yourself and your family.

Leaving early means leaving the area before a fire starts - not when you can see flames or smell smoke.

Leaving early helps you avoid panic, becoming trapped, making rushed decisions, and risking serious injury or death.
Talk to your family and friends about how you’ll know when to leave and where you’ll go to stay safe.

Know your trigger to leave
❗ The Fire Danger Rating is your trigger to act. The higher the rating, the more dangerous the situation if a fire starts.
❗ On a Catastrophic day, leaving high-risk bushfire areas the night before or early in the morning is the safest option.
❗ Don’t rely on an official warning to leave. Bushfires can start quickly and threaten lives and homes within minutes.

A hard but important reality.
If a fire starts in your area, CFA cannot guarantee a fire truck will be available to defend your property.

The safest option is for you not to be there when fire starts.

If you don't have a Bushfire Survival Plan - now is the time to make one.

Create your personalised fire plan using the Fire Planner Tool. All Victorians need to know how to plan for, and respond to fire.

🚒 Fighting Fire With Fire-Power 🎯

Yesterday, the brigade was delighted to be invited to the Wangaratta Rifle Club’s charity target shooting event at the Rifle Range in Glenrowan.

This year; we’re fortunate enough to be the beneficiaries of the event, with funds raised on the day being donated to our brigade.

Whilst in attendance, members were able to take a deep dive into the competitive nature of target shooting, learning about the different classes of events, how the scoring system works and quickly learning that something so simple in principal from the outside is a mastery of accuracy and consistency by the competitors.

Did you also know that the club has origins back to 1884? If you would like to learn more; head over to their website or page!

Whilst the end of the Fire Danger Period in the rural city of Wangaratta and Benalla Council areas mark the easing of certain fire restrictions, we urge all residents to remain vigilant if burning off as the landscape is still dry.

If you do intend to burn off, please do so safely and responsibly by following CFA guidelines, which include:

• Checking CFA & local council restrictions in your area 📝

• Registering your burn-off on 1800 668 511 or online via https://www.firepermits.vic.gov.au 📱 💻

• Notifying neighbours 📞

• Monitor weather conditions, particularly wind, and the forecast for days following. 💨 🌧️ ☀️

• Ensure you have sufficient clearing, or a fire-break around your burn.

• Never leave a burn-off unattended. 🧍‍♂️🧍‍♀️ 🚫

• Keep an adequate water supply and firefighting equipment on hand. 💧

• Ensure the fire is completely extinguished before leaving. ✅

For more information on safely burning off please see the CFA website here:
