DRUGS IN THE WORKPLACE
Drug misuse in the workplace can be a serious problem not only for the user themselves but also for the business where they work and, sometimes depending on the circumstances for their co-workers. For example, are your staff armed security guards? It is an offence to be under the influence of drugs while in possession of a firearm, it is also very dangerous
As a business owner or operator IS IT MY CONCERN? The answer is YES
• The possession of drugs is illegal, it can expose the user to the risk of criminal charges as well as causing harmful effects to their health. However, you could also be breaking the law if you knowingly allow drug-related activities in your workplace and you fail to act.
• Do not be an enabler. Do not turn a blind eye to the situation.
• It is important to know the implications to both your employees and business of not tackling drug misuse, particularly where safety is involved.
• Successfully tackling drug misuse can benefit both your business and your employees.
By for example,
• Reducing the cost of recruiting and/or training new employees to replace those who might have their employment terminated because of untreated drug misuse,
• Reducing the cost of absenteeism,
• Creating a more productive environment,
• Improving employee morale,
• Reducing the risk of accidents which are caused by impaired judgement because of illegal drug use,
• Enhancing your company or organisation as a responsible employer
• Showing that you are contributing to the community’s efforts to combat drug misuse.
