Sunday Reflection with Sam — The Beginning of Something
I've spent the past four days away from home in Brisbane, teaching a new group of students as they take their first steps into the world of Bowen Therapy.
There's something rather special about watching people at the beginning of something.
They arrive not quite knowing what to expect.
There's excitement. Nervousness. Concentration. A lot of information going into already-full brains. Hands trying to remember what the brain was just told. Occasionally that expression that says, I'm sorry, you want me to remember WHAT now?
We've all been beginners.
And I think we forget how much courage there is in that.
To walk into a room where you don't know everything, where you dot know anyone.
To allow yourself to be taught.
To get things wrong.
To ask questions.
To try again.
To trust that eventually the awkward, unfamiliar thing you're doing will start to feel like something you know.
As a teacher, I have the privilege of seeing something my students can't see yet.
Potential.
I don't know where Bowen will take each of them.
For some it might become a completely new career. For others it might change the direction of the one they're already in. It might introduce people into their lives they haven't met yet, take them places they haven't imagined, or simply give them a skill they'll one day be very grateful they learned.
They don't know yet.
They're only at the beginning.
That's the beautiful thing about beginnings.
We rarely recognise the important ones while we're standing in them.
Sometimes they just look like a room full of unfamiliar faces, a slightly overwhelmed brain and the decision to give something new a go, and then one day you look back and realise…
That's where it started, and like all good stories, it's only just the begininning.
