The Lost Continent Beneath New Zealand 🌏

Many people grow up believing there are only seven continents, but scientists say an eighth may have been hiding beneath our feet the whole time. Zealandia, also known as Te Riu-a-Māui, is a vast underwater continent stretching across the southwest Pacific, with New Zealand forming the highest visible peaks above the ocean.

Around 94% of Zealandia lies submerged beneath the sea, which is why it remained unnoticed for so long. Geologists officially strengthened the case for it being recognised as a continent in 2017 after decades of research into its unique continental crust, rock formations and ancient separation from Gondwana roughly 80 million years ago.

The discovery has helped reshape the way scientists understand Earth’s geological history and New Zealand’s place in the world. It also explains why New Zealand has such dramatic landscapes, volcanic activity and unique wildlife found nowhere else on Earth.
