Last Monday night we held our brigade meeting.

One of the things we need to do as a brigade is to honour our members and thank those that have giving time to the community and the brigade.

After many years we finally got our honour board completed honouring those officers that have been part of the Country Fire Service at the Goolwa brigade and are currently serving and served as officers.

We also want to recognized some members that have given a lot over the years.

Mal Biscoe for his service to the brigade both here and overseas. Mal has served in a few states but has been with Goolwa for over 10 years spending time in the USA and Canada as part of firefighting efforts from SACFS. Was awarded the brigades first custom Challenge Coin for recognition of his service.

Ray Rothe, also known as Grandad to all of us was given a special coffee cup to keep him smiling each Monday night. There is a story that goes with this, so if you ever drop in say hi and ask him all about it. He loves a good chat.

Barry Burt for 39 years of service to the community and the Goolwa Fire Station. During this time he has only spent 3 years at another brigade, but the rest has been just dedicated to the Goolwa Fire Station. An amazing effort to still be giving to the service. He now gets to serve at the station with his 2 sons.

Brayden Miller gets the Captains award. A very special one, but we will leave it up to him to explain the details on this. 😀

Ken Smirke was presented with Life Membership to the Country Fire Service. Ken has attended 1330 jobs for help since 2008 when electronic records have been keep only spending 4 years of service at another brigade the other 22 years at Goolwa. we thank you Ken for all that you do for the brigade. It's not just calls to jobs it is also a huge amount of work that goes on behind the scene that he does.

In 2024-25 a Total of 203 Incidents was attended by our members totalling 10,916 Hrs worth of work. Its a lot of hours given up of lost income and time away from families, but we don't do it because we are missing out. We all enjoy helping people that need help. These hours don't capture the hours spent cleaning trucks, changing out equipment, filling air cylinders and general duties at the station each week.

We do thank all our members for everything they do, we have a heap more awards to hand out but cant give them all on one night, so there will be more recognition to come. So next time you see one of our trucks out make sure you give a wave to the fireys riding the trucks. They do appreciate it.

Well that's a wrap for the 25/2026 fire danger season.

Our crews this year have spent a lot of hours on the fire ground with the Nangkita fire on the 18th of Jan then the Deep Creek fire on the 1st of February. It seemed like our volunteers didn't get a break. For one of our members, the deep creek fire was her first ever fire. Straight from a basic fire training coarse and onto the truck. A quick way to settle the nerve's. Well done and great job.

During this time our community gave us some huge support. And it's the little things that make a big difference. A big shout out to Brad from Supreme auto mart and our local awesome 3 bakery's. He approached them and they where kind enough to donate a huge amount of food that was greatly appreciated by the members during the Nangkita fire.

Dollies Lollies for the continued supply of snakes over this period that now it would appear we have all become addicted too. 🤣 Thankyou so much, it's put's a huge smiles on all our faces.

To Satish and his crew from the BP service station. The use of the car wash to clean off the trucks initial ash, dust and grime, oh and the pizza's gets a large thumbs up from the members.

We would also like to thank Tanya from Supreme auto mart for going above and beyond and organising their suppliers to donate cleaning equipment and gear to upkeep our appliances. Big thanks to all the suppliers that are in the background behind the scenes.

So as the fire season has come to an end all the farmers around the district will start to burn and clear stubble in hope of getting seed into the ground as rain comes, but like yesterday there could be large amounts of smoke that comes from this, it's is all part of living near open farming land. Most of the farmers do ring and tell us they are burning and we log this with our call and dispatch centre. If you do have any concerns please ring 000.

If anyone want's to drop in and have tour around the station we are there Monday nights from 7pm you are more then welcome.

Please get behind all our local business, and Support local.

On behalf of all the Officers and Crew at the Goolwa Fire Station I would like to thank all the local's and local businesses for their support over the summer fire season.

To my Brigade members, thankyou for the commitment that you all have given to the community, with time away from work and family. With out you guys our trucks wouldn't get out the door.

Regards Goolwa Captain

Another thankyou to local business.

Another huge shoutout is to Supreme auto mart for organising with their suppliers to put together a cleaning package for our trucks. We would really like to thank the team from Supreme and make mention to, Bapcor, Bowden's and Meguiars for donating products and equipment to help keep our Fire Trucks clean.

As volunteers we can spend many hours with buckets, brooms and hand washers keeping these trucks clean. But this takes hours away from our jobs, family's and our home life. Which can put a strain on employment, partners and life in general. We do take pride in our station and these items will help reduce the time it will take to wash these trucks after spending hours on the fire ground and then cleaning them.

We are very humbled at the way the Goolwa community and businesses support each other within this great town. Next time your in the market for automotive equipment, car care, car parts or even need a push bike. Take the time to drop into Supreme say hi 👋 and support them like they do our community.

As Captain I think we are going to see some tough days ahead as prices rise from high fuel costs. So please support our local businesses. You never know that you might be helping one of the local businesses that employ a volunteer firefighter, or one that works for themself and gives up his or her time to go help people when they need it.

Once again thankyou to the team and Tanya from Supreme for organising this gear to help us..

And if your looking to volunteer and think you could become a firefighter feel free to come down and see us on a Monday night. Our training starts from 7pm

Goolwa Fire Station would like to thank Satish and the crew from the Goolwa BP service station for so kindly allowing us to use their car wash to clean our trucks after the last few months of incidents we have attended.

As you can imagine when you spend time on the fire ground there is a fair build up of ash and debris that end up on these appliances.

The use of the high pressure hoses and soaps at the car wash makes light work of making these trucks sparkle.

Thankyou very much Satish.

We have a few local business to thank over this coming week, for their support for the community and our volunteers at our station. Its the community that makes our station function, ordinary members of the public helping one another. Keep an eye out for future posts of the other business that have supported us over this summer, and please support them over this coming year.

Watch & Act - DEEP CREEK Bushfire - Leave Now

WARNING AREA
Deep Creek, Silverton and Blowhole Beach Road, 8 kilometers east of Cape Jervis near the Fleurieu Peninsula

ACTION
Leave now. This bushfire may threaten your safety. Check that the path is clear and go to a safer place. Do not enter this area as conditions are dangerous. The Deep Creek bushfire remains uncontrolled. This scrub fire is burning in a west north westerly direction towards Cape Jervis. Anyone in Blowhole Beach Road, Silverton, Talisker Conservation Park, Woodroofe Road, and Main South Road, and the Heysen Trail, North West of the Deep Creek National Park should enact their bushfire plans and leave now if it is safe to do so. This is a fast moving bushfire and anyone on the outskirts of the warning area should prepare to enact their bushfire plans. Conditions are continually changing. For updates, check the CFS website at cfs. sa. gov. au or phone the Information Hotline on 1800 362 361. Click on map to enlarge.

WHAT YOU SHOULD DO

Check and follow your Bushfire Survival Plan. Protect yourself from the fire’s heat – put on protective clothing. Tell family or friends of your plans.

IF YOU ARE LEAVING

Leave now, don’t delay. Roads may become blocked or access may change. Smoke will reduce visibility. Secure your pets for travel. If you become stuck in your car, park away from bushes, cover yourself, get onto the floor as the windows may break from the intense heat.

IF YOU ARE NOT LEAVING - PREPARE TO DEFEND

Identify a safe place inside, with more than one exit, before the fire arrives. Keep moving away from the heat of the fire. Bring pets inside and restrain them. Move flammable materials such as doormats, wheelie bins and outdoor furniture away from your house. Close doors and windows to keep smoke out. If you have sprinklers, turn them on to wet the areas. If the building catches fire, go to an area already burnt. Check around you for anything burning.

Saturday the 24th of January. Total Fire bans are in place. 🚒

Please be extra vigilant over the Australia day long weekend.

We are seeing high temps which in return poses high fire danger.

Please be reminded there is under no circumstances you can use a solid fuel Fire for anything. We have received calls asking if it is ok to use Pizza ovens, Smokers etc this weekend. If it is a Total Fire Ban you cannot use any of these items. Only gas appliances are allowed, and you still need to follow safety protocol's. For the full list of what you can and cant do please go to the CFS website, and if in any doubt to the rules please don't do it.

Our volunteers are out on the fire ground, working to help maintain the edge of the fire with other brigades at the Tooperang Fire ground to ensure it doesn't flare up. So for Goolwa and other towns alike we have 1 fire appliance committed to the fire ground. This leaves only 1 appliance in our town. We ask all visitors and locals to all regions to make smart choices when celebrating this long weekend.

🧨🎆 Only Last night around 11:50pm in Goolwa some irresponsible people where setting off Fire Works. 🤷‍♂️ We ask the community to report to Police of any such incidents. During this weather the fire danger is high, the threat to the public is high. So please refrain from doing this. 🫵

We would also like to thank all the business in Goolwa and surrounds that have donated food, invited us to their business for coffee or food, chipped in to offer their support. All crews are exhausted and its very much appreciated.

Finally now is the time to make sure you have your 5 min bushfire plan in place, and if you have ever thought of volunteering please make contact with your local brigades. Operation fire fighters are needed.

We like to thank Brett’s Tools in Gtown.

Last week we found a blow out on our sack truck tire. Needing to move slabs of drinking water around in our station in preparation for the total fire bans we needed some new wheels. One of our members went into Brett’s tools and they kindly donated 2 new solid tire wheels so we don’t have this happen again.

Thankyou guys.

Well worth a look in there, they have a huge range of gear.

Fire Call this morning at 8:08am to a comfort fire on the beach at the end of the walk over on Dent Street.

Just a reminder on total fire ban days there is no solid fuel fires allowed. If you have lite a fire make sure you have completely extinguished them before leaving. Do not bury them on the beach as they smoulder under the sand for days and are a hazard to others using the beach, and please make sure you pick up your rubbish.
