Today marks Mabo Day, honouring Eddie Koiki Mabo and the historic decision that recognised native title in Australia. A powerful reminder of resilience, justice, and truth.

Eddie Koiki Mabo, a Meriam man from Mer (Murray Island) in the Torres Strait, whose decade long legal fight led to the landmark Mabo v Queensland (No 2) decision in 1992. The High Court ruled that the Meriam people were the rightful custodians of their land — a decision that:

• Overturned terra nullius, the colonial idea that Australia belonged to no one before British arrival.
• Recognised native title for the first time in Australian law.
• Paved the way for the Native Title Act 1993, establishing a framework for future land rights claims.

Explore the Mavis Phillips nee Walley Collection

Mavis Phillips captures the joy, pride, and everyday moments of our local Noongar community at a time when our people were segregated.

What began as a chocolate tin of old negatives became a cultural treasure when her daughter, Dallas, shared them and discovered their true significance. These images are rare, powerful, and deeply personal — a glimpse into our community’s strength, love, and history through Mavis’s eyes.
