Acclaimed biographer Ian W Shaw has written the first detailed biography about Squizzy Taylor - infamous Australian standover man, tracing the tales of this criminal who set the trend in city gangster life, not only in Melbourne but nation wide.

Joseph Leslie 'Squizzy' Taylor was many things to many people: a kind and caring husband, father and stepfather, a reliable son and brother, a generous and considerate neighbour and patron. He was also a criminal willing to consider any type of crime, provided it supported his lifestyle and his ego.

Squizzy graduated from teenage pickpocket to adult murderer, from organising smash-and-grab raids on jewellers to corrupting juries and suborning witnesses. And he was nothing if not newsworthy, whether appearing at the opening night of a new show at the top end of Bourke Street or climbing the steps en route to an appearance in the Supreme Court.

For more than a decade, Victoria's best detectives were unable to pin any one of a dozen major crimes on him. Yet Squizzy ultimately met his match in street-punk-turned-gunman Snowy Cutmore in a darkened bedroom in a boarding house in Carlton.

Our interactive sessions this holidays are with Diver Dave, experienced deep sea diver and ocean sustainability guide.

The second session, for primary kids, will teach us all about protecting our oceans, beaches, and rock pools, and the creatures that live in them. Learn more about sea critters and interact with live animals in the splash tank including sea stars, sea urchins, snails, corals, sponges, and many others...(maybe even an octopus!)

Explore the fossil and shell collections to learn how these are formed, see the amazing Megalodon tooth, shark jaws and more!

Our interactive sessions this holidays are with Diver Dave, experienced deep sea diver and ocean sustainability guide.

The first session, for preschool kids, will teach us all about rockpool sea creatures and the important roles they each play in the ocean. We will get hands-on in the splash tank and feel the spiky sea urchins, play hide and seek with the hermit crabs, hold a sea star, or even pat a sea slug!

This week we are travelling back to 1979 and this recently digitised negative of the Penberthy & Donnelly Store that was located in Verner Street. The business originally commenced as a notable coachbuilding business in 1887 but later pivoted with the decline of horse-drawn vehicles to include motor body building. What a great example of evolving with the times!

Ian W. Shaw is an acclaimed writer of narrative nonfiction who has made an important contribution to Australian history and to the understanding of our nation with 12 works covering Australian and military history, all of which are characterised by his meticulous and far-reaching research, and his ability to locate and access hidden tales from our past. He has a gift for effectively and sympathetically rendering the individuals within these stories on the page. He writes on Australian history with a rare emotional depth, presenting clear, engaging and accurate narratives that help make our collective past accessible and relatable.

His publications include The Golden Gang, a biography of Australian bushranger Frank Gardiner, Missing, the tragic story of a WWII fighter pilot’s brutal sacrifice and the painstaking search for the truth, and Into the Sunset, exploring the story of the Dalton gang, as well as Operation Babylift, Murder at Dusk, The Rag Tag Fleet, The Bloodbath, On Radji Beach, The Ghosts of Roebuck Bay, and Glenrowan. Ian’s most recent book is The Dark Prince of Melbourne: The Short, Flashy Life of Squizzy Taylor published by ABC Books/HarperCollins in 2025 - which he will be coming to chat to us about in just 2 weeks' time!

For our craft for older kids this holidays we have chosen weaving - together we will be making little stuffed turtles to take home as our very own ocean friends!

Using bright, colorful yarn on a simple circle loom, kids will learn the basics of weaving. Simple sewing techniques will also be used to attach the loomed turtle shell onto its felt body. Make friends and enjoy afternoon tea while learning a new craft.

Today we're celebrating Indigenous Literacy Day and this year's theme, 'Country Is Our Teacher'. Indigenous Literacy Day is a national celebration of First Nations peoples' stories, cultures and languages.

At StoryBox Hub, we are proud to support and champion First Nations voices and storytelling. More than 10% of our library features First Nations stories, helping young readers and viewers engage with diverse perspectives, cultural knowledge and the richness of the world's oldest continuing cultures.

We believe stories have the power to connect us, build understanding and foster curiosity. Through the work of First Nations authors, illustrators and storytellers, children can explore stories that celebrate identity, language, culture and connection to Country.

Today, we encourage our community to read, listen and learn through First Nations stories, while celebrating the important work of the Indigenous Literacy Foundation and their commitment to improving access to culturally relevant books and literacy resources for children living in remote Communities.
