This is the official page of the 25th / 49th Battalion, Royal Queensland Regiment (25/49 RQR).

The 25th/49th Battalion, the Royal Queensland Regiment (25/49 RQR) is a Reserve light infantry battalion in the Australian Army, based in the state of Queensland. The 25th Battalion, an Army Reserve unit, and the 49th Battalion, then a Ready Reserve unit, linked at the end of the Ready Reserve scheme on 1 Jul 1997 to form 25/49 RQR. Although it was officially formed in 1997, the unit can trace its

lineage back to units that were formed in 1875 as part of the colonial defence force of the state of Queensland. Additionally, in order to preserve the honours and traditions of the Australian Imperial Force, the battalion is the custodian of the battle honours awarded to two battalions that were formed for service during World War I. The Unit is currently based in the following locations:

• Battalion Headquarters – Based in Greenbank
• Alpha Company – Based in Toowoomba, Gatton, Roma, Dalby, Warwick and Wondai
• Bravo Company – Based in Southport
• Charlie Company – Based in Loganlea
• Support Company – Based in Greenbank

Since the linking of the units, 25/49 RQR personnel have deployed on the following operations: Anode, Astute, Relex, Catalyst, Sumatra Assist, Slipper, Resolute, Mazurka, Citadel, Tanager, Pacific Assist 15, as part of Rifle Company Butterworth, Bushfire Assist, COVID Assist, and Flood Assist.

Late last month the 25th / 49th Battalion, Royal Queensland Regiment was proud to join the 25th Battalion Association in commemorating the Battle of Milne Bay in Toowoomba. A Company did an outstanding job providing the catafalque party with Battalion Headquarters also providing representational support. Supporting our associations in commemorating our battle honours is a vital part of maintaining our links to our history and the community.

Back on the tools! 💪🏻 It’s been a busy period recently for the 25th / 49th Battalion, Royal Queensland Regiment as we focus on getting more of our soldiers fully qualified to shoot, move, communicate and medicate on the battlefield. In just the past few weeks alone the battalion has conducted qualification training on the Mk47 Gr***de Launcher (AGL), a night navigation exercise, Tactical Care of the Combat Casualty (TCCC) recertification, satellite communications training, armoured vehicle driver training, combat conditioning, and much much more! We’ve also promoted a number of our outstanding warfighters - recognising their leadership. Our Australian Army reservists are constantly working hard to ensure they are ready to serve Defence Australia and protect Australia and Australians.

Duty and Honour! 🇦🇺 Trainees have now successfully completed the 25th / 49th Battalion, Royal Queensland Regiment run Land Combat Module 2 - Infantry Rifleman Course, which is the final culminating training block for our 2nd Division - Australian Army infantry soldiers. Each of the trainees has been tested physically and mentally and at times been pushed to their absolute limits - but this is what it means to be an infantry soldier. Each trainee was personally congratulated and presented with a Royal Australian Infantry Corps cap badge to welcome them to the corps. A number of individuals were recognised for outstanding personal achievements on the course too, including PTE Potts who was awarded the Student of Merit. Congratulations to the Australian Army‘s newest infantry soldiers! 🫡

Over the past few days the trainees on the 25th / 49th Battalion, Royal Queensland Regiment run Land Combat Module 2 - Infantry Rifleman course, which is the final training block for our reserve Australian Army infantry soldiers, have been busy completing a number of their culminating activities. This has included live fire section attacks by day and by night, and a number of endurance activities - including the timed pack march. The role of the infantry is to seek out and close with the enemy, to kill or capture them, to seize and hold ground, and to repel attacks by day or night, regardless of season, weather, or terrain - so it's vital we train our 2nd Division - Australian Army infantry soldiers to be able to do just that and be to support Defence Australia operations.

Diggers just keep on digging! ⛏️ The 25th / 49th Battalion, Royal Queensland Regiment is currently running a Module 2, Infantry Rifleman course at Greenbank Training Area. This course is the culminating training activity for our Australian Army Reserve infantry soldiers, and upon completion they are fully qualified for service within the Royal Australian Infantry. The trainees on course are not just from Queensland either - they are from all over Australia. 25/49 RQR is proud to be providing trained soldiers and increasing capability to multiple 2nd Division - Australian Army units.

Recently the Commanding Officer and the Regimental Sergeant Major hosted a Professional Military Education (PME) exercise for the 25th / 49th Battalion, Royal Queensland Regiment's officers at Kokoda Barracks, Canungra. The theme of the day was junior leadership on the battlefield, and the battalion's officers were given a number of presentations on combat command, resilience and command guidence. They also participated in a number of leadership exercises - including working in teams to complete the Land Warfare Centre obstacle course! Learning for our Australian Army leaders doesn't end at the completion of a course - it is a continual process of self-improvement, reflection, professionalism...and getting sore, tired and wet!

We’re missing you already! 🥹 Over 3-19 July 2026 the amazing communities of Gladstone, Queensland and wider Central Queensland hosted the 25th / 49th Battalion, Royal Queensland Regiment Task Unit as we rehearsed working with our interagency partners on the Joint Operations Command coordinated Exercise Austral Shield 26. And a massive highlight was our Australian Army soldiers being able to work in and with the community - because domestic security is everyone’s responsibility. We were incredibly humbled at the warm welcome and cooperation we received everywhere we went, and we can’t wait to come back. To everyone in the community - thank you! I’s honour to serve you! 🫡

Exercise Austral Shield 26 may be over, but our ongoing relationship with Gladstone, Queensland is just beginning. The achievement of the Joint Operations Command Theatre Mission 1 - the defence of Australia, means Defence Australia Task Units from the 2nd Division - Australian Army will continue to rehearse our ability to deploy to regional Australia and protect critical infrastructure, assets, and Australians. But protection means protection of - not protection from. The 25th / 49th Battalion, Royal Queensland Regiment task unit has proven over the past 3 weeks that you can’t protect critical infrastructure by simply sitting on top of it. Protection requires a layered, interagency approach and Defence Australia can best support this by protecting the approaches to these locations, and by closely engaging with the community to gain their consent for our presence and to make security everyone’s responsibility.

And that’s a wrap on Austral Shield 26 for JTF 629 in Central Queensland! 🇦🇺⚔️ For the past three weeks the 25th / 49th Battalion, Royal Queensland Regiment led Task Unit has had the absolute privilege of working in Gladstone, Queensland rehearsing our ability to protect critical infrastructure and perform domestic security based operations in accordance with the Joint Operations Command Theatre Mission 1 - Defend Australia.

It’s been brilliant working with our interagency partners to understand and rehearse how our organisations can work together to enhance security within regional Australia. In particular, massive shouts out to Mayor Matt Burnett and the Gladstone Regional Council, the Queensland Police Service, the Gladstone Airport Corporation, the Gladstone Ports Corporation, the Gladstone State Emergency Service, Powerlink Queensland, Legacy Australia, and Maritime Safety Queensland for exercising with us and leaning in so enthusiastically and supportively - we couldn’t have done it without you.

In addition to our work with our partners, we’ve also rehearsed out ability to plan and execute deliberate foundation warfighting missions within the domestic environment to protect Australians, we’ve tested our lines of communication and resupply being doing long range patrols into the centre of Queensland, and we’ve built relationships with key stakeholders all across Central Queensland.

In particular though, we want to thank the people of Gladstone, Queensland for your overwhelming support. We’ve been absolutely humbled at the community response to us exercising in and around your city - you’ve really made us feel welcome. In addition to our Task Unit achieving all its tactical and operational aims, you have enabled our Australian Army soldiers to truly understand how vital positive community engagement is to military success on Defence Australia operations.
