Happy Wear It Purple Day!

We’ve had a purple-filled week at Nillumbik baking fun treats, wearing colourful outfits, and showing our support for LGBTQA+ young people.

Across the week Council staff and local young people have been writing messages to show LGBTIQA+ young people we see them, we support them, and are committed to creating safe inclusive spaces for everyone to thrive in.

Last week community spirit was shining bright at the Nillumbik Community Awards held at Eltham Community and Reception Centre.

A massive congratulations to Esme Johnson, who was awarded Nillumbik Young Citizen of the Year!

Esme is an inspiring young environmental leader involved in Friends of Warrandyte State Park, Edendale Youth Enviro Team, Research Junior CFA and so much more. Her enthusiasm, innovation and commitment are helping build a more environmentally conscious future for Nillumbik.

Congratulations also to Lexi Patman, who received a high commendation, as well as Tahlia Edmonds, Elliot Thomas, and Advik Palta for being nominated.

Last chance to join our youth-led zine crew!

If you’re a budding writer, photographer, or graphic designer, or just enjoy learning new creative skills, this program is for you.

We’re looking for young people age 15-25 to help create this year’s edition of our youth-led zine, The Wrap Up. All participants will receive a voucher as recognition for their contributions.

Are you a budding writer, photographer, or graphic designer? Do you want to learn new creative skills and have your work published?

We’re looking for young people age 15-25 to help create this year’s edition of our youth-led zine, The Wrap Up.

As part of the crew you will participate in 8 creative workshops, design and curate the zine content, and collect and share stories celebrating young people in our community.

🚨 The Australian Government is launching AusAlert, a new national warning system that can send emergency messages to compatible mobile devices in times of disaster.

AusAlert will be ready to use from October 2026, but before it launches it will be tested across Australia.

A national test of the system will take place at 2pm on Monday 27 July. This alert will be sent to all compatible mobile devices across Australia.

🔊 Expect a loud warning sound (around 10 seconds) and vibration and a notification that appears on your screen, even during calls or when your phone is locked.

We recognise this alert may be distressing for some people, including those impacted by family violence, victim survivors or individuals who have experienced past trauma.

Although you cannot opt out of the alert, if the alert impacts your safety:
▶️ Turn your mobile device off or switch to aeroplane mode before 2pm
▶️ Leave it off for at least one hour.

Nillumbeats are looking for a young musician to open the 2026 Nillumbik Youth Fest Skate Event! Expressions of Interest is currently open, follow the link or scan the QR Code to apply!

🎼 Open to young bands, solo artists, choirs - however you perform!

🎸 All performers must be aged between 12 and 25 years
