Then, She Never Returns is presented by Art Echo Foundation, featuring works by Australian Chinese and Chinese women artists. Explore the works of Echo Cai, Ni Ni, Zoey Zuo & Tammy Yang.

This multi-media exhibition explores ideas of gender, memory, time, and the quiet strength that often goes unseen. Rather than giving answers, this exhibition creates a space - for watching, listening, and being with what is often unspoken.

Get • Once upon a time in a land called Victoria, a little girl hand-painted coins using only the light of a candle.🕯️

Born in 1930, Diana Bates grew up on a farm in Christmas Hills, north-east of Melbourne, until the family tragically lost their home and animals in the Black Friday bushfire of 13 January 1939.

Shortly after that, Diana’s father enlisted for service in the Second World War.

Wanting an escape from these anxieties, Diana used a collection of foreign and defunct coins to create a glittering cast of royals, paupers, farmers and priestesses. ✨

She began painting the coins as a nine-year-old and kept her hobby throughout her teen years.

Diana and her brother Terry played by pushing the coins back and forth across a table, imagining their characters acting out lives of drama, romance and intrigue.
