In mid May, a group of our amazing volunteers took our larger rescue vessel, Shoalhaven 30 (SA30), to Ulladulla to complete her slip, and have a 5 year survey done.

The 5 year survey is undertaken by an independent Maritime Surveyor, and is akin to getting a pink slip for your car to ensure it is both safe and sea worthy.
As well as the 5 year survey, the hull was polished and a number of mechanical issues were addressed, the hull was painted and primed.

These things ensure our vessel is kept in top condition and is compliant, so that our volunteers are able to do our work, saving lives on the water.

We also like to thank and acknowledge the following local businesses for their support
Ulladulla Slipway
Kennedy's Shipwrights
Adam Stafford - Maritime Surveyor
All Diesel Marine

Will you join us in congratulating Bill C for his 45 years of service, with over 20 of them with Marine Rescue Shoalhaven.

He is an incredible member of our team who has served our unit in many ways, as a skipper, Unit Commander and much more.

Bill was presented his award by Marine Rescue NSW Zone Commander Mike Hammond, with Shoalhaven Unit Commander Marty K looking on.

Steve enjoys spending time on the water, and after seeing a sign advertising for volunteers to join the local Marine Rescue Unit at a club in Culburra, Steve decided to apply.

While Steve works as a flying instructor for a major Australian airline, these days he is semi retired, and he had time to give to a worthwhile cause as he began his transition into retirement. He was also interested in learning more about local waterways and conditions from locals, so he thought this was the perfect way to do it.

He started in the radio room, where he had an opportunity to learn more about Marine Rescue as an organisation, our unit and the processes in place to do the work well.

After about 7 months into his radio operator training and receiving his operator qualifications, Steve decided he wanted to also become a crew member. He was dedicated in training, and successfully achieved his crew rating. If you go out on your boat on a Friday morning, it is usually Steve supporting you on the radio and other times it is is Steve on our rescue boat helping you in the water.

When asked what he enjoyed the most about volunteering with Marine Rescue Shoalhaven, Steve said he liked the routine, and being able to support people by giving them information, and assisting people when they were in trouble. He is always prepared for call outs, so that he can help people when they need it the most.

Like all of our volunteers, Steve is an invaluable member of our unit, a volunteer saving lives on the water.

On Saturday 16 May, some of our dedicated volunteer members had the privilege of being the water safety supervisors for the Southern Region Sports & Community Regatta, hosted by the Nowra Waterdragons on Shoalhaven River.

Our crew took an event official on board for the day. Which gave us a better understanding of the race and the participants

It was a fantastic day to be part of, but we were very happy that there were no incidents at the event that required our specialised rescue support.

While our social media has been quiet over recent weeks, our volunteers in the radio room and on the vessels have been as busy as usual.

We have been able to assist a number of people, both in the river and offshore. All 5 assists have all been to do with engine issues and engine failure. Our radio operators and crews have worked together to bring 9 people and their variety of vessels home safely.

We have had a tinny, open runabouts, cabin runabouts and a cuddy cabin.

We were also tasked to do a search off Gerringong, as a flare was reported as being seen.

Last month Laurie P, one of our amazing volunteers had the privledge of atttending the Berry View Club April meeting.

Laurie had the opportunity to represent our unit, and share with the members the history of our unit, beginning as Shoalhaven Anglers and the creation of Marine Rescue NSW. He was able to share ways in which our unit volunteers not only assists boaters, but actively saves lives on the water.

He shared about some of our recent rescues, and how important it is for boaters to wear life jackets, follow safety guidelines and why logging on is so important.
