Hanwood Rural Fire Brigade serves the Griffith and its surrounds in a range of emergency situations.

🔥 Bush Fire Danger Period starts 1 October

The Bush Fire Danger Period (BFDP) begins across the MIA District on 1 October 2026 and runs through to 31 March 2027.

If you have timber or other piles that you’re planning to burn, now is the time to get it done.

🔥 Planning a pile burn? Don’t leave it until October.

Once the BFDP begins, timber and accumulated piles cannot be burnt.

If you’re planning to burn before the BFDP starts:

📅 Plan ahead and burn before 1 October.
📢 Notify your neighbours and fire authorities at least 24 hours before lighting.
💧 Make sure you have adequate firefighting equipment and water available.
🌬️ Check the weather and conditions before lighting.
👀 Never leave your fire unattended and make sure it is completely extinguished.

Remember, burning can still occur during the BFDP, but restrictions and requirements apply.

🔥 Planning a burn on your property? Make sure you notify first.

With the Bush Fire Danger Period approaching fast across most of NSW, now is the time many landholders will be looking to reduce fuel loads and undertake hazard reduction or pile burns.

If you’re planning to burn, remember:

📢 Notify your neighbours and fire authorities at least 24 hours before lighting up.
🔥 Make sure you have adequate firebreaks in place.
💧 Have appropriate firefighting equipment and enough water on hand.
👀 Never leave a fire unattended.
🚫 Check the conditions before you light up — including whether a Total Fire Ban is in place.

Notifying your burn helps fire authorities distinguish controlled burns from escaped fires, reducing unnecessary Triple Zero (000) calls and the deployment of firefighting crews.

You can quickly and easily notify a planned burn online via the NSW RFS notification tool, available 24/7 on your phone or desktop.

💪🚒Breathing Apparatus training day! BAO and SFF members from NSW RFS - Hanwood Brigade and NSW RFS - Bilbul Brigade were out in force at the NSW Rural Fire Service - MIA District training facility today to sharpen their skills. This mornings focus was on door entry skills, search and rescue, and defensive firefighting. Honing these skills now means when we need them, crews can work together and know each others strengths before we even get to a scene. 🔥🔥

🔥 Training Through Teamwork 🔥

Last night, members of Hanwood Rural Fire Brigade, alongside Bilbul Rural Fire Brigade, assisted Griffith City Council with the safe burning of a number of vegetation piles at Pioneer Park.

Activities like these provide our volunteers with valuable hands-on experience working with live fire in a safe and controlled environment. They allow members to develop and maintain important firefighting skills, practice safe fireground operations, and build confidence in managing fire behaviour.

Just as importantly, opportunities like this strengthen the working relationships between neighbouring brigades. Training and operating together ensures we can work seamlessly as one team when responding to emergencies across our district.

A big thank you to Griffith City Council for the opportunity and to all of the volunteers from Hanwood and Bilbul who gave up their evening to support the operation.

Today, members from Hanwood Rural Fire Brigade, alongside Fire and Rescue NSW Station 311 Griffith and Myall Park Rural Fire Brigade, were proud to assist Griffith City Council by watering the trees planted as part of National Tree Planting Day.

It was a great example of local emergency services, Council and community members working together to support an initiative that will benefit our community and environment for years to come.

Today Hanwood RFB had the honour in unveiling an Indigenous artwork installation on our Cat 1 Tanker.

Natalie Smith, Wiradjuri woman and long standing member of our Hanwood brigade painted this artwork titled Walumali Ngurambang ‘Protecting Community’, telling the story of our brigade and district protecting community and working together to build strong relationships between indigenous community and the Rural Fire Service.

This truck will be seen by community, in community. Responding to emergency incidents, community events and providing support to other agencies.

We as a brigade are proud of our commitment to engaging with Indigenous community to build relationships and work together for the common goal of a strong and protected community.

Thank you to those who attended the unveiling today. We as a brigade look forward to continuing to support community.

Over the weekend members from Hanwood joined in with multiple RFS brigades and Forestry Corp members to complete the ACE workshop in Temora.

The ACE workshop is designed to give members a better understanding of vital communications between the fire ground and aviation support.

2022/2023” NSW Premier’s Flood Emergency Citations.
Recently members of Hanwood Brigade have been honoured to receive the Premiers Flood Emergency Citations for their continued assistance during the 2022/23 floods.
Our brigade is proud of all members who gave their time and efforts during the flood event that affected so many lives.

Thursday night training : “making the dream work”
Last night crews took on the obstacle course where team work makes the dream work.
Using precise communication, teamwork and problem solving, crews were required to work throughout an obstacle course carrying a makeshift stretcher whilst maintaining the “patients” balance.
The night was finished off with a game of “bowls” helping to fine tune our hose techniques and add a little competition to the mix.

Thank you to everyone who was able to attend and assist.
