Despite the recent storms, it is a tad dry still with warm weather. So just another little extra additional time added to the fire season. Means for permits will still be required at least till the end of April.

Mid-Western Regional Council LGA

Despite the easing of restrictions across much of the state, the Bush Fire Danger Period remains in place across the Mid-Western area due to areas of dry and increased fuel loads.

Fire permits are still required for any burning activities until midnight, 30 April 2026 and it is important that residents continue to take a cautious and well-prepared approach to burning activities.

Across the district, we have had four grass fires in the last week which had the potential to threaten property if it wasn’t for the quick response of RFS volunteers.

Residents planning to burn off can request a permit and notify their local brigade using the online tool at www.rfs.nsw.gov.au/notify or contact the Fire Control Centre on (02) 6370 9800.

20th February 2026 05:15 PM - Gulgong DC along with NSW RFS - Cumbo Brigade were paged to a tree down on Cope Road just past Sportsmans Hollow Creek bridge. While in attendance the keen eyed Cumbo Brigade Captain noticed a tree alight in a neighboring paddock. Gulgong took over the tree clearing with a chainsaw while Cumbo handled the recently lightning struck tree with their smaller and lighter unit to get across the recently deluged paddock. Once both tasks were completed Gulgong's heavier Category 1 tanker refilled Cumbo's smaller Category 9 striker unit and both vehicles returned to station.

19th February 2026 02:25 PM - Gulgong DC along with NSW RFS - Cumbo Brigade were paged to a reported smoke sighting in the vicinity East of Rissler Road - Stubbo. Once the intermittent smoke was seen and identified, crews made entry to the scene off Walkerville Road. With the guidance from Bruce..our man in the air flying in Helitak 233 from Commercial Helicopters ,crews made entry to the scene with some off road driving and walking in, as Bruce in 233 kept bucketing the burning area from above to keep the fire contained. With close coordination and teamwork on the ground and in the air, crews managed to get to the scene and run hose lines to blacken out the area and drop the remains of the burning tree safely to ensure it was totally extinguished. Cause of this one was again a lightning strike.

Gulgong 1 and 6 responded to find a tree struck by lightning some 200m-300m up on a rocky ridge. 10th February 2026 06:42 PM - Gulgong DC were paged to assist NSW RFS - Cumbo Brigade and NSW SES - Mudgee Unit with reports of a tree down across Mudhut Creek Road near Yarrawonga Road at Home Rule, following a storm in the area. Crews arrived to find an isolated mess of tree debris and a few larger limbs strewn over the road. After arrival we all worked together as a team to make short work of the mess and cleared the road. What was interesting about this call was the focused mess created in a such a small area of about 200 square meters affecting trees in limbs in that small space, but leaving surrounding trees intact.
