Most driving lessons teach you how to pass a test — defensive driving teaches you how to handle the unexpected with control and clarity. We recommend new drivers undertake both during their learning.

Defensive driving training goes beyond vehicle control and road rules, focusing on how drivers think, how hazards develop, and how to create time and space to respond. Because on real roads, things don’t always go to plan.

Defensive driving builds practical techniques to anticipate risk, manage other people’s mistakes, and make better decisions when it matters most — not just when everything goes right.

Let’s talk tyre pressure.

When you hit the brakes hard in an emergency:
Correctly inflated tyres keep their shape.

The contact area stays stable, grip is maximised, and systems like ABS can do their job properly — helping you steer and stay in control while stopping in the shortest distance possible.

Underinflated tyres deform and flex.
The contact area becomes reduced, grip is impacted, and the tyre doesn’t have as much contact with the road surface — increasing the chance of a skid, lengthening stopping distances, and risking loss of control.

It’s not just about wear or fuel economy.

Tyre pressure directly affects how your car behaves when it matters most.
Check it regularly.

Most drivers don’t plan for mistakes —
they assume everything will go right… until it doesn’t.

The car in front brakes late.
The driver beside you doesn’t check.
A pedestrian steps out.

If your plan only works when everyone else gets it right… it’s not a plan — it’s a reaction.

Defensive driving builds a margin for human error — not just yours, but everyone else’s.

Because on the road, you’re not just driving your car… you’re managing the consequences of other people’s decisions too.

Driving with your thumbs locked inside the steering wheel rim is dangerous. It can cause broken or dislocated thumbs during airbag deployment or sudden wheel jerks, such as hitting a pothole or during off-road driving..

The recommended technique is to keep your thumbs resting on the outside of the wheel.

Double standards?

A recent road safety survey found almost every driver (96%) ranked tailgating as their number-one bugbear… assuming everyone annoyed by it would never do it themselves — boy, that 4% gets around!

A lot of people think defensive driving is sharp reactions and high-speed manoeuvres… like a video game.

They couldn’t be more wrong!

Done properly, it’s calm, measured — almost dull (but in a good way)..
It’s about anticipating problems before they happen.
Avoiding situations instead of reacting to them.
Keeping traffic flowing, not fighting it.
Looking out for others when they’re not looking out for themselves.

Sometimes, the move you make quietly prevents someone else’s mistake from becoming something serious.

You read the road. You respond early.

You stay in control — and you get home calmer.

For all the advances in vehicle technology, one thing hasn’t kept pace — you, the human behind the wheel.

Modern cars can brake faster, grip harder, and process more driving data than ever before. But the brain driving them? It hasn’t evolved so fast. It’s still running on ancient wiring designed for survival on foot, not in high-speed traffic.

Your reaction time hasn’t changed. Your attention is still limited. Under pressure, your brain can still freeze, fixate, or make the wrong call.

Technology can assist, but it can’t replace human decision-making. Because no matter how advanced the car becomes… until self-driving technology is widespread, the weakest link is still human.

Level up your evolution with a defensive driving course today!

On most trips, speeding will save you very little time, if any. Over a 50km highway trip, speeding at 120km/hr instead of 110 will get you there 2 minutes and 16 seconds faster, but it will also DOUBLE your likelihood of a serious injury or fatality crash.

2 minutes isn’t much of a gain when you look at it like that, is it?
