Dear Families,

This term, our students across all year levels have been engaging in meaningful learning experiences centred around understanding themselves, their emotions, and their relationships with others. These units have been designed to foster personal growth, emotional intelligence, and respectful interactions, which are vital skills for life.
Our youngest learners have been exploring what makes each of us unique while also recognising the similarities that bring us together. Through stories, play-based activities, and group discussions, they’ve been learning to identify and describe different emotions and how these feelings influence our interactions. We’ve also been focusing on developing personal and social skills, such as sharing, taking turns, and showing kindness, to help them build positive relationships with their peers.
In the primary years, students have been delving deeper into the concept of identity, exploring how their personal qualities shape who they are. They’ve been reflecting on how their emotions and responses can impact not only their own feelings but also those of others. Through role-playing, creative projects, and class discussions, they’ve been practising empathy and learning how to navigate social situations with care and understanding.
Our secondary students have been focusing on the factors that influence and strengthen their sense of identity, including their values, relationships, and experiences. They’ve been developing strategies to manage emotions, adapt to changes, and navigate life’s transitions with resilience. Additionally, they’ve been honing their interpersonal skills to ensure they can interact respectfully and effectively with others in a variety of contexts.
It has been especially enjoyable to watch the students express their emotions through creative activities that also help develop their fine motor skills. From designing scribble monsters to crafting expressive playdoh faces, the children have been using art to communicate their feelings in fun and imaginative ways. Another highlight has been their emotion selfies, where students captured a range of emotions through photography. This activity not only encouraged self-expression but also helped build confidence and self-awareness. Attached below are some wonderful snapshots of these moments—we hope you enjoy seeing their creativity as much as we have!

Communication is at the heart of learning, friendships, and participation at Gympie Special School. By valuing and modelling all forms of communication, we are creating an inclusive school community where every student's voice is heard, respected, and celebrated.
Here are some photos of our students and staff showcasing how they use different forms of communication to access the curriculum every day. Devices such as PODD (Pragmatic Organisation Dynamic Display) and Proloquo2Go not only support students who are non-verbal to have a voice but can also be used alongside speech to broaden vocabulary, knowledge and understanding with all our students.
We also have some new communication boards in the playground. This is to make communication accessible to our students at all times, even during play! Our early years students were very curious and started using the new boards immediately!

On Thursdays this term I have been busy making music and enjoying music with students. EY and Primary students experimented with different percussion instruments, making a lot of noise but having a lot of fun in the process. Secondary students relaxed by listening to piano music while playing various games on their own and with others. In all, it’s been fun to experience how music and music-making can improve our mood, help us think creatively, and enhance our relationships with others.
