🏡 Hey Mary Valley, do you have an idea for your property or business but aren’t sure what’s possible?

Gympie Regional Council is inviting Mary Valley residents and businesses to book a 20-minute one-on-one conversation with a Council officer at its upcoming Mary Valley ‘Ask Council’ event.

💡 Get practical, easy-to-understand advice about land use, permits, grants, business ideas, and opportunities that could support growth in the Mary Valley and wider Gympie region.

The pilot event has been developed in response to community demand for quick, simple advice as the region prepares for opportunities associated with the Borumba Hydro Project, the Brisbane 2032 Olympics, and increased tourism and population growth.

The Du Rietz Art Awards are almost here 🎨

The Gympie Region’s premier art competition returns this September, with 97 works shortlisted from a record 264 entries from artists across Australia.

Join us for the Opening Night and Awards Announcement on Friday 11 September, when this year’s winners will be revealed and more than $15,000 in prize money will be awarded across five categories.

There’s plenty happening throughout the exhibition:

It was great to catch up with Michael Condon to hear about the latest from the Queenslanders with Disability Network (QDN) and what’s coming up for the Gympie Peer Support Group.

Last month’s meeting saw Council’s Coordinator for Disaster Management Peter Southern share practical tips to help residents with disability prepare for floods, storms, and bushfires.

This month, representatives from the SES will be joining the group to continue the conversation around disaster preparedness.

The Gympie QDN Peer Support Group is run by, and for, people with disability, providing a welcoming space to connect, share experiences and discuss the issues that matter most. The group also plays an important role in helping inform Council’s emergency planning and recovery.

Water Update | Cooloola Cove & Tin Can Bay

Council crews have been working this week to repair two significant water main breaks at Seawitch Crescent and Nautilus Drive, Cooloola Cove.

As a result, water levels in the reservoir supplying Cooloola Cove and Tin Can Bay are currently low. We'd appreciate residents reducing water use where possible while the reservoir refills

Important information:
💧 Some residents may experience lower water pressure temporarily
💧 Water remains safe to drink
💧 Please help by using water wisely over the coming days. This will help the reservoir refill sooner.

Road crews are still onsite at Seawitch Crescent. Please follow all signage and directions from traffic control while works are underway.

Ageing water pipes can sometimes lead to water main breaks in our coastal communities. Council is investing in upgrades and replacements to improve reliability and help prevent issues before they occur. This year, $49.6 million has been allocated to improving water and wastewater infrastructure across the region.

Thank you to everyone who promptly reported the breaks and for your patience and understanding while crews carry out repairs.

Did you know that as part of Council’s bushfire preparedness program, we partner with Queensland Fire Department, other state agencies and Traditional owner groups to conduct prescribed burns to manage natural areas, maintain ecosystems, and reduce bushfire risk 🔥

Council has recently undertaken hazard reduction burns at Rainbow Beach, Gunalda, and Glastonbury and works closely with authorities to monitor conditions and plan its activities across all times of the year.

This is just one of many ways Council’s works closely with the community to ensure our region is ready for any disaster. With bushfire season now here, we encourage residents to make their own plans and use the resources available thanks to Queensland Fire Department.

Works are continuing at Reef Street, with crews making great progress. Recent works completed include driveway works, pipe repairs and preparation of the road for the new kerb and channel along the park side of Reef Street, with concrete works scheduled to commence next week.

🚧 Traffic management changes from Wednesday, 26 August:
To facilitate the next stage of works and help keep the community safe, temporary closures will be in place for footpaths and parking areas highlighted in red on the map. Alternative parking can be found along River Road.

🚶 Pedestrian access is available by following the blue line shown on the map.

These changes will be in place for 2–3 weeks, weather permitting.

Please continue to follow all onsite signage and directions from traffic control personnel when travelling through the area.

Thank you for your patience and cooperation while these important upgrade works take place.

Works have kicked off at the James Kidd Oval carpark at the One Mile Sports Precinct, with the existing gravel surface being replaced with asphalt and more than 30 clearly marked parking bays being installed. The project will improve stormwater drainage across the site, helping reduce water pooling and improve access to the sports fields.

Once complete, the improved parking area will provide a more accessible and reliable space for the school and sporting community, during busy periods and wet weather.

After years of collaboration between councils, technical experts and our communities, we’re pleased to share the final outcomes of the Burnett River and Tributaries Catchment Flood Study.

The study improves our understanding of flood behaviour across the Burnett River catchment and its tributaries, supporting better planning and stronger community resilience into the future.
