Here’s one to ponder on a foggy almost winter’s day … it’s the AFAC seasonal bushfire outlook for winter. It’s what it says about spring and beyond in Victoria that should have your attention …

The Harrietville RFB would like to congratulate the Porepunkah CFA on the official opening of its refurbished station on Saturday 23 May.

Members of the Harrietville RFB attended the occasion, which was marked by fascinating reminiscences from former brigade members, a presentation by Assistant Chief Fire Officer for District 24 Steve Contessa and a plaque dedication by CFA Board member Ross Coyle. Assistant Chief Fire Officer Paul King AFSM and Commander Carl Stibilj also attended the event.

Station improvements include a dedicated Breathing Apparatus maintenance area, increased administration capability, inclusive member amenities, and an enhanced meeting space alongside an upgraded kitchen. The project was funded through a combination of the Victorian Government's VESEP grant and a large contribution from the community.

Listening to stories about the brigade's history from Porepunkah Fire Brigade Captain Michael Dalbosco and past and present members was a reminder that rural fire brigades are multi-generational communities.

Brigades are where locals, often multiple generations of entire families, come together in many different ways to voluntarily protect and support their local community. In the process, they often become part of that community's history.

Thank you Porepunkah CFA for inviting us to share this special occasion.

Plan how you would escape a fire in your home

Families who are well-prepared are more likely to escape their homes safely and without panic.

As part of your plan, all family members should know:

πŸ‘‰The two quickest ways out of every room
πŸ‘‰How they will exit from upstairs if your home has a second storey
πŸ‘‰An agreed-upon meeting place outside, such as the letterbox
🀳How they will call Triple Zero (000)

Everyone needs to know what to do, including what to do if you have to evacuate in the middle of the night.

Remember: Never lock your deadlocks when you're at home. During a fire it will be dark and smoky – and a deadlocked door could block your escape. If you must keep deadlocks locked, leave your keys in the door.

Winter home fire safety

It might be hard to believe, but a clothes dryer can cause a household fire if the lint filter is not cleaned after every load.

The amount of heat generated in a dryer can easily ignite the lint in a filter, resulting in a fire.

And always let your dryer complete it’s cool down cycle.

Don't forget:
πŸ“‹Every family needs to develop a home fire escape plan and practise it. Your plan should include two ways to escape each room of the house, and a designated safe meeting point, such as the letterbox.

πŸšͺIf you deadlock doors when you're at home, always leave keys in the lock to avoid becoming trapped.

🚨Make sure you have working smoke alarms

Winter is coming...and most people don't think about fires during cold weather.

But in fact there are many fire risks during winter caused by heating and woodfires. Here are some important tips:

πŸ›ŒπŸΎMake sure heaters are off before going to bed or going out

πŸ‘šKeep clothing, curtains or toys one metre away from heaters - and don't dry clothes on them

πŸ”₯Always use a fire screen in front of an open fire

Check if you are ready for winter with the CFA's Home Fire Safety Checklist:

Only working smoke alarms save lives.

πŸ‘ƒDid you know that smell is the least likely sense to wake you when you are sleeping?

That's right, you won't be woken by the smell of smoke. So it's critical that you have working smoke alarms in your house that are checked regularly, especially in your bedrooms.

New smoke alarms that have a 10 year lifespan ensure families can feel the highest level of security.

These new alarms provide the security of knowing you and your family are protected, while also ensuring you’re not interrupted every year with a nagging smoke alarm.

πŸ‘‚Hard of hearing? Specialised smoke alarms are available for people who may have difficulty hearing standard smoke alarms and evacuation systems.

The main body of the unit looks like a normal smoke alarm on your ceiling. The other parts are a strobe light (sight) and vibrating pad (tactile) for your bed. In the event of a fire, all alarms will sound, the lights will flash, and the vibrating pad will activate.
