NSW SES-Harrington Unit

NSW SES-Harrington Unit The NSW SES (New South Wales State Emergency Service) Harrington Unit is the local combat
agency for floods, storms and tsunami.

The NSW State Emergency Service (SES) is an emergency, preparedness and response service dedicated to
assisting the community of NSW. It is made up almost entirely of volunteers, with 229 units located
throughout the state. The units comprise of approximately 10,000 volunteer members, who are easily
identified by their distinctive orange overalls. While our core responsibilities are for flood, sto

rm and tsunami operations, the NSW SES also provides support
to general rescue efforts in the State. This includes Road Crash Rescue (RCR), Vertical Rescue (VR), Urban
Search and Rescue (USR), evidence searches (both metropolitan and rural) and other forms of specialist rescue
that may be required due to local threats. Volunteers in a number of isolated communities have also been
trained as Community First Responders by the Ambulance Service of New South Wales. The Service's trained
rescuers also support the full-time emergency services during major disasters. The NSW SES assists other
emergency services when they are performing major operations. These services include the NSW Police Force,
the NSW Rural Fire Service, Fire and Rescue NSW and the Ambulance Service of NSW. The NSW SES also partners with local communities through Community Engagement programs like FloodSafe,
StormSafe and TsunamiSafe. These programs are supported by strategies and resources, are delivered locally
through a range of activities and events and are a priority for the NSW SES. The aim is to engage at-risk
communities on preparedness, response and recovery measures so that there is no loss of life and impacts
caused by these events are minimised. This in turn builds community resilience to floods, storms and tsunami. For further information visit the NSW SES website at http://www.ses.nsw.gov.au/

🟠WHO LET THE BOATS OUT - 2026🟠

This morning, we were lucky to have been joined by Marine Rescue Crowdy Harrington while participating in an annual statewide training and exercise day conducted by the NSW SES.
Participating crews were put through their paces, with live on water training scenarios.
Such a fun, action packed morning enjoyed by both crews learning, training and refreshing their on water skills.
Well done to all crews involved in the day.

If you’ve ever felt that quiet pull to do something that truly matters — this might be it.

Joining the NSW State Emergency Service isn’t about being a hero. It’s about being willing.

Willing to learn.
Willing to train.
Willing to show up when your community needs you most.

From storms and floods to road crash rescue and community education, SES volunteers are everyday people who step forward in extraordinary moments. Teachers. Tradies. Parents. Students. Retirees. People just like you.

You don’t need experience — you’ll be trained and supported every step of the way. What matters most is commitment, teamwork, and a desire to serve something bigger than yourself.

Volunteering with the SES means:
• Gaining practical, real-world skills
• Building lifelong friendships
• Strengthening your leadership and resilience
• Making a genuine difference in your local community

Sometimes the call to serve is loud.
Sometimes it’s quiet.
But when the storm hits, you’ll be glad you answered it.

Join the SES. Because when it matters most, someone needs to show up. Join today at https://www.ses.nsw.gov.au/volunteer.

🔶WHAT WE DON’T DO🔶

🟠🟠 To assist our community, our volunteers carry out “temporary” emergency repairs for damage caused by flooding and storms.
Our role is to make the situation safe and prevent further damage. 🟠🟠

🌲 Has a fallen tree blocked access? i.e. front door/driveway/road?

🌲 Is a tree threatening to fall on your property or driveway?

🏠 Is your roof damaged or leaking?

🏠 Is there damage to your property that you cannot fix yourself?

⚠️ If you answered “No” to the above questions, please contact your insurance company or a private contractor to assess and complete the job, or repair it yourself if safe to do so.
