SES Hastings Unit

VICSES Hastings Unit - Volunteer Rescue When needed we occasionally send teams interstate to assist with major disasters.

Hastings SES members are a group of enthusiastic volunteers providing services to members of the southern regions of the Mornington Peninsula 24 hrs a day, 7 days a week. Our role includes Storm and Flood response and we are the combating agency for Flood, Storm, Tsunami and Earthquake in the area. We also provide support to other agencies such as Victoria Police, Ambulance Victoria, CFA and other

SES units across the state. Our members are dedicated to the role they play in the community and train regularly to maintain their skills and knowledge. We are funded by grants from council and state government, however the majority of our funds come from donations from individuals and organisations. If you are interested in learning more about who we are and what we do, are interested in being a volunteer (we provide the training and you don't have to be active to play a part in our team, there are roles for those who wish to support and not respond), or donate to us please contact us as we would love to hear from you!

Over the past 2 weeks, Hastings SES has seen the beginning of an incredible partnership and project to redevelop the garden spaces at the Hastings SES Unit.

The Project began on the 20th of August and will continue through to the 17th of September where Hastings SES Volunteers and students from westernportsecondarycollege are working hand in hand, supported by the teams at Bunnings Warehouse Australia Hastings and Everest Timber to redevelop the units garden space into a beautiful memorial space where Volunteers can go to have a quiet space to reflect and relax, particularly after a long day out serving the community.

This initiative provides a fantastic opportunity for SES volunteers to share their practical skills, knowledge, and community values with the next generation. In return, students will gain hands on experience, learn the importance of community service, and contribute their enthusiasm and energy to a meaningful project. Together, we will create something that not only enhances the local environment but also strengthens community connections.

While some incredible work has been done by the volunteers, staff and students so far, we’re eager to show the community the garden as it begins to take shape over the coming weeks, stay tuned 🧡

Happy International Dog Day 🧡🐾

Here at Hastings SES we love our furry companions big and small and today’s the day to celebrate their loving contributions, not just to our households, but also to the world of Search and Rescue!

While our members may make their dogs look the part with some adorable SES costumes did you know that some dogs don’t just look the part, but they really do help save lives?

Today we’re giving a massive shout out to our friends at SARDA-Search & Rescue Dogs Australia Inc and Australian Search and Rescue K9 who’s team of highly skilled search and rescue members (and their handlers too) work incredibly hard when duty calls to assist with finding missing people, and we simply love working alongside our cutest partner agency!

Last night, Hastings SES welcomed the EPA to our unit to run a familiarisation session on our incident air monitoring equipment.

Hastings unit is one of a few units statewide with this capability, and we can be deployed anywhere, anytime to provide it.

Our Incident Air Monitoring System is deployed at the request of the EPA to areas which may be experiencing dust, smoke or other forms of air pollution and provides real time information reporting to the EPAs head office, this information helps create warnings on the VicEmergency app to help keep our communities safe.

Here at Hastings SES we’re proud to support the EPA with this capability, giving us another way we can help victorians when it matters most 🧡

This weekend saw five members undertake training to become Crew Member level 2 for VICSES. A massive congratulations on successfully continuing on your VICSES journey and the opportunities that await. Thank you to those who completed the training and those who facilitated it . This is all done by our amazing volunteers who serve our local communities.

Hastings SES have joined eighteen SES Units from Melbournes South-east and Eastern Region to assist Victoria Police with a search for a missing person in Blind Bight.

Across these deployments, five of our members joined approximately forty five VICSES volunteers from these Units, to search a large area which covered varying types of terrains. Incidents like these highlight the importance of interagency operations and having our trained volunteers ready to deploy to assist with complex and prolonged search events.

SES Hastings Unit would like to thank our members, and those from the other units, for giving up their time to assist in such an important operation.

Damaging Winds Expected - Prepare Now ‼️⚠️

Damaging winds are once again expected across our beautiful Mornington Peninsula for the duration of today and into the evening with gusts expecting to exceed the 60kph mark, act now to prepare your home and property:

1. Move your Car undercover and away from trees 🚗 🌳
2. Secure all outdoor furniture and where possible bring items inside away from the elements ☂️ 🏠
3. Stay informed by monitoring the VicEmergency app and social media pages for the most up to date information 📱

And as always, please stay safe. Our volunteers are on call 24/7 to support the community, if you require assistance from the SES, call 132 500 ☎️

Your local SES volunteers have been out in the community all day, clearing roads and assisting with flooding incidents. Since 6am our volunteers have responded to 10 requests for assistance (RFAs) including a mix of trees on roads, trees restricting access and flooding calls, not to mention the times our crews had to stop en-route to manage a small problem on the roadside.

Please remember, especially on stormy and wet days, when driving past stationary emergency vehicles you must travel at 40kph. If you don’t this puts our volunteers and the community at risk. Please, help us help you!

Severe Weather Warning ⚠️

Heavy rain and winds are forecast across the peninsula and surrounding areas on Saturday afternoon and Sunday, now is the time to prepare.

Take the following steps to ensure you stay safe during the weather:

❗️Clear leaves and other obstructions from around drains
❗️Secure loose outdoor items before the weather arrives
❗️Clear gutters and down pipes to prevent water from entering your home
❗️Don’t park under trees, rain softens the ground and increases the risk of falling trees
❗️Never EVER drive through floodwater, it takes just 15cm of water to float most cars

If you find yourself in need of assistance, call 132 500 for storm related emergencies and 000 for Life-Threatening emergencies ☎️

Hastings SES’ Female First Responder Networking Afternoon

Hastings SES would like to extend a heartfelt thanks to all the emergency service members and guest speakers who came out to this year’s Female First Responder Networking Afternoon that was held at Hastings SES last Sunday the 2nd of August.

The day bought members from each service together to strengthen connections and friendships across the services.

Have you ever wondered what happens when you call the SES?

If you call 132 500 because you have experienced storm damage or had a tree fall that requires SES assistance, you’ll first go to one of VICSES’ dedicated call takers who will ask you a range of questions relating to the incident.

Once that’s happened, the Request For Assistance (RFA) will be assigned to the closest VICSES Volunteer Unit, for many of you who live in the northern half of the Mornington Peninsula that will be us here at Hastings Unit.

Once our pagers activate, our volunteer unit duty officer will acknowledge the job and get some more information to determine how we can best assist you. Sometimes the Unit Duty Officer will give you a call to understand a little more about what’s happening on scene, so it’s very important that where possible, you keep your phone close by Incase we give you a call.

From here, if the unit duty officer decides that an SES response is required, they will assign a crew of our highly skilled volunteer members to attend, manage the incident and make the scene safe, this could be anything from cutting up a tree, performing temporary damage repairs, containing a flood and everything in between!

Once the incident has been deemed safe, our crews will return to the unit to clean and restock the truck and equipment to ensure that we’re ready and available for when the next call comes in.
