Apologies for the disruption on Main Road last night folks, turns out a lot of volunteers from Sturt Group and Upper Sturt were keen to get involved in this group exercise.

Always good to train with our brothers and sisters from neighbouring brigades - it’s like they always say: train hard to play easy!

Last night crews from Blackwood, Coromandel Valley and Eden Hills brigades were called to a structure fire in Blackwood. On arrival crews found a garden shed fully involved, threatening to spread to nearby structures and vehicles. 🏠πŸ”₯πŸ”₯

Thanks to a fast and effective response from our volunteers, the fire was contained to the shed, with only minimal damage to exposures on both sides. Fortunately residents were able to evacuate and no one was injured. πŸš’πŸ§‘β€πŸš’

After a busy fire season, this incident provides a timely reminder that CFS is more than a bushfire service - in reality Sturt Group responds mostly to urban related incidents.

If you or someone you know is interested in helping our community by becoming a volunteer firefighter, send us a message or email [email protected] to find out more.

The smell of democracy sausage is in the air once again! 🌭🌭

If you are heading to a polling both today, why not show your support for a different kind of red and blue πŸš’πŸš¨?

Sturt Group volunteer fire fighters and cadets will be at polling booths across Hawthorndene, Blackwood, Coro, Cherry Gardens and Belair, raising funds to help us continue providing 24/7 fire and rescue cover for our wonderful community.

Come say hi to your local fireys, and consider making a donation. If you are interested in learning more about volunteering, we’re happy to have a chat! πŸ‘©β€πŸš’πŸ§‘β€πŸš’

Want to know a sign of true love? πŸ₯°πŸ˜When bae supports your hobby or β€˜special interest’, even when that turns out to be decades of volunteering as a firefighter! πŸ˜΅β€πŸ’«

At Blackwood Brigade, we sincerely cherish, respect and appreciate our WHAPs (wives, husbands and partners). They show saintly patience for all the interrupted meals, unscheduled wake-up calls and last minute cancelled plans. πŸ”₯πŸ”₯πŸ“ŸπŸš’

They show courage and compassion when we leave for dangerous or challenging incidents. They even have the grace to endure shop talk, war stories and endless jargon (WTH is a QRV/ bushie/ bulky???)

This one goes out to all of our partners - we truly couldn’t do this without you. Family and community is at the core of volunteering - so happy Valentine’s Day y’all! πŸ‘©β€πŸš’πŸ§‘β€πŸš’πŸ₯°πŸ˜˜

Not just a bushfire service: while the Deep Creek Fire has been keeping Blackwood Brigade busy, our first priority is always keeping our community safe. 🌳πŸ”₯

We live in a peri-urban setting, meaning that while we have substantial bushfire risk, most of our day to day responses are for urban incidents - including our specialisation of road crash rescue. πŸš˜πŸš™

So far this week we have responded to car fires and a structural fire. Today our crews worked to contain a fire in a garage, and were able to save the nearby house. 🏑

We are proud to be doing our part πŸš’πŸ§‘β€πŸš’Would you like to know more? [email protected]

This is really shaping up to be our BRAT Summer! (BRAT means Blackwood Responds to All Things right???)πŸš¨πŸš’πŸš¨

So far this year we have been to fires in Victoria, Tooperang and Deep Creek, as well as plenty of calls in our local area, including road crash rescues, building impacts and many, many trees down. We even responded to a moon sighting last night! πŸŒ™

Blackwood Brigade, along with our Sturt Group brothers and sisters will be continuing to send crews to the Deep Creek fire. Given its size and complexity, we will probably be there another 6-7 times before it’s done. πŸ”₯ πŸ”₯πŸ§‘β€πŸš’πŸ‘©β€πŸš’

Strewth, the long weekend is shaping up to be a scorcher! β˜€οΈπŸ₯΅β˜€οΈ

While we hope everyone has a happy and safe weekend, it’s a good time to be thinking about:

πŸ‘‰ Are you and your loved ones prepared for extreme or catastrophic fire danger conditions? πŸ”₯πŸ”₯πŸ”₯ Make sure you have a bushfire survival plan ready in advance, install the AlertSA app and remember to check those fire bans!

πŸ‘‰ Are you and your loved ones prepared for a heatwave? Make sure you, your family and animals stay cool and hydrated, and remember to check up on anyone you are worried about. πŸ₯΅πŸ₯΅πŸ₯΅

πŸ‘‰ While our trees are important for staying cool, be mindful that extreme weather can cause limbs to fall 🌳🏑🌳

Have a great weekend everyone, make sure you look after yourselves and your community! If you see our fire appliances getting around, give us a wave πŸ‘‹ (and please remember to give way to emergency vehicles when safe to do so!πŸš¨πŸš’πŸš¨).

This summer is shaping up to be busy for Blackwood Brigade! On Sunday our crews deployed as part of a Sturt Group strike team to the Tooperang fire, where they worked on protecting assets and securing the fire edge, including through the use of back burning.

Our brigade has continued to assist at Tooperang throughout the week, deploying fire fighters and an appliance to help with containment. This fire is a good reminder that we don’t need catastrophic conditions for grass fires to spread rapidly. If you haven’t already, please take the time to complete or go over your bushfire survival plan.

Yesterday afternoon volunteers from Blackwood Brigade and Sturt Group, along with colleagues from CFS, MFS and SAAS, retuned safe and well from a busy 5 day deployment.

The multi-agency strike teams spent most of their time at the Carlisle River fires in the Otways, where they defended houses, responded to breakouts and strengthened containment lines.

Meanwhile at home Blackwood Brigade continued to serve our community, including at the tragic incident on Upper Sturt Road.

If you or someone you know is interested in helping our community by becoming a volunteer firefighter, send us a message or email [email protected] to find out more.

This week, firefighters from Blackwood Brigade and Sturt Group have joined colleagues from CFS, MFS and Parks on a deployment to Victoria.

The multi-agency strike teams have been working at the Mount Mercer and Carlisle River fires, where they have been defending houses, containing breakouts and making fire edges safe. Most importantly our crews have been giving our Victorian brothers and sisters some well deserved assistance and relief.
