3 of our members will be participating in the 2026 Melbourne Firefighter Stair Climb!

The Melbourne Firefighter Stair Climb is an annual fundraising event to raise money and awareness for Lifeline, Peter MacCallum Cancer Foundation and the 000 Foundation.

Our members (left to right: Finn, Brandan and Kyle) will join 1000 other Emergency Service workers to run up 28 floors of the Crown Metropol in Melbourne. Wearing 25kg of gear with Breathing Apparatus, it will certainly be a challenge!

Help support our members fundraising effort using the link below to raise money for 3 great charities.

Best of luck to them!

Last week we completed our Breathing Apparatus (BA) skills maintenance training.

Every 6 months, our BA qualified firefighters must don and wear BA to renew their qualification and improve their skillset. Last Thursday night, we trained Search and Rescue, Hose Deployment and Ladder safety. These are essential skills for structural/ urban firefighting.

Thank you to those who organised such a great training night.

AusAlert is Australia’s new national warning system.

It does not replace VicEmergency and will only be used in certain situations.

AusAlert is being tested at 2 pm on Monday 27 July.

What to expect: You’ll get an alert on your mobile device. It will vibrate and make a loud, siren-like sound that lasts about 10 seconds - even if your phone is on ‘silent’ or ‘do not disturb’.

Safety: If this test could cause you or a loved one to feel unsafe, please turn off your mobile devices or switch them to aeroplane mode before the scheduled test time. Leave them off for at least one hour.

As this is just a test, you don’t need to do anything. However, in an actual disaster you should follow the alert instructions to keep yourself and others safe.

To hear what an AusAlert sounds like and to learn more, visit ausalert.gov.au.

This school holidays, take the time to practise your home fire escape plan with your family.

Take the opportunity to talk to your family and tick off these boxes:

- Practise the two quickest ways out of every room.

- Know how you'll exit from upstairs if your home has a second storey.

- Have an agreed meeting place outside, like the letterbox.

- Make sure everyone, including children, knows how to call Triple Zero (000).

- Smoke alarms working and up to date.

- And remember, once you are out, stay out!

Incident Update: Maroondah Parade House Fire:

Yesterday at approx. 5.45pm we were paged, alongside Badger Creek CFA, to a House Fire on Maroondah Parade in Healesville. Crews were quick to respond and arrived to find the house engulfed in flames. Firefighters quickly put on Breathing Apparatus to protect the neighbouring house that was under threat from burning fences and trees.

With the neighbouring house safe, crews worked to extinguish the house. The fire was quickly contained by both External and Internal Firefighters in Breathing Apparatus. Though the structure remained standing, the contents of the house were unfortunately lost. Thank you to Badger Creek Fire Brigade and Bayswater Fire Brigade-CFA BA Unit for their assistance.

Our thoughts are with the owners.

House fires can happen to anyone this winter, but a few simple steps can make all the difference.

Firstly, every family needs a Home Fire Escape Plan that includes:

- Two ways to escape from every room
- A designated safe meeting place outside (like the letterbox)
Practise it regularly so everyone knows what to do.

To minimise the risk:

- Never leave cooking unattended
- Keep anything flammable away from the stove
- Keep heaters/ fireplaces clear (at least 1 metre from clothing, curtains, toys, etc.)
- Test your smoke alarms monthly and change batteries yearly
- Keep matches and lighters out of reach of children.

For more information visit the CFA website.

Stay safe this winter!
