Over the coming days, crews will be conducting a series of planned hazard reduction burns across the community:

🔥 Sunday 26 April
• Gills Gully (Helensburgh)
• Cranberry St (Loftus)

🔥 Monday 27 April
• Purrungully Woodland (Horsley)

🔥 Tuesday 28 and Wednesday 29 April
• Wollongong Coal 1 (Russell Vale)

These burns are a critical part of our ongoing work to reduce fuel loads and help protect our communities, firefighters, and the environment ahead of the next fire season. Planned burns like these play an important role in lowering the intensity and spread of bush fires.

We understand that smoke from these operations can impact local communities and surrounding areas. We acknowledge the effects this may have already had and appreciate your patience and understanding while this important work is carried out.

Smoke may be visible and may settle in low-lying areas, particularly overnight and early in the mornings. Motorists are reminded to drive to conditions if encountering smoke on roads.

We encourage residents to stay informed and take simple steps to minimise exposure to smoke where possible.

Thank you for your continued support as we work to keep our communities safer.

Hazard Reductions

Some across the Community may have seen smoke coming from Hazard Reductions across the Greater Sydney over the past few days. Where these Hazard Reductions are being carried out the conditions are far more favourable than what we currently have across the Illawarra Sutherland Team.

However, we along with our partner agencies are monitoring the Fuel Moisture Content across all our planned Hazard Reduction sites. This means we are calculating the percentage of moisture in the ground fuels, which is decreasing with the fine warm and dry weather.

The current readings we are seeing across sites in the Sutherland Shire and Northern Illawarra are almost within the parameters of what we would consider the ideal conditions for us to carry out safe, viable burning to mitigate the risk of wildfire across future fire danger periods.

The RFS, NPWS, FRNSW are monitoring these conditions with a view to potentially commencing Hazard Reduction works in the middle of next week. This is a timely reminder to ensure you have “Hazards Near Me” downloaded, monitor the NSW Rural Fire Service website and your local Brigades social media page. I also invite you to download and review the local Bush Fire Risk Management Plans for the Local Government Areas of Illawarra and Sutherland. https://www.rfs.nsw.gov.au/plan-and-prepare/know-your-risk/bush-fire-risk-management-plans

We are committed to bush fire hazard mitigation and will continue to prepare for every opportunity to undertake this vital work

Everyone has a role to play in planning for bush fires – fire authorities, landowners, land managers, planning authorities, local councils and the community.

31/03/2026

Today, 31 March, marks the end of the statutory Bush Fire Danger Period (BFDP) for the majority of NSW. However, due to the ongoing fire risk, the BFDP will be extended in four Local Government Areas, including Gwydir, Mid-Western, Moree Plains and Narrabri.

While many landholders may no longer require a fire permit, you are still required to notify the RFS and your neighbours of your intention to burn at least 24 hours before lighting the fire.

For more information on the bush fire danger period and fire permits, visit the website: www.rfs.nsw.gov.au/BFDP

The Illawarra/Sutherland Team was proud to join Real Life Community Group in Coniston this week for their Independent Living Expo.

Our team had a fantastic time connecting with community members, sharing important safety information, and showcasing our AIDER program (Assistance for Infirm, Disabled and Elderly Residents). This program helps people remain confident and independent in their daily lives while preparing for the upcoming fire season, keeping their homes safe, and ensuring they have a plan in place.

It was also great to see the energy and support from all the exhibitors involved and a true reflection of community spirit.
A big thank you to Real Life Assistance for bringing everyone together and for the valuable work they continue to do in supporting our community. If you would like more information please visit our website on www.rfs.nsw.gov.au

You may notice something a little different...

Some of our firefighters may be seen wearing a different uniform than what you're used to. Albion Park Rural Fire Brigade is currently trialling the new RFS uniform.

The trial will help the RFS gather feedback on how the uniform performs in day-to-day brigade activities and operational environments.

Heathcote 81 Crew

As the summer of 1982-83 approached, most of N.S.W. was affected by the prolonged drought which had existed for more than four years. Coastal areas were particularly affected, and tinder dry conditions existed in many forested areas, including the Sutherland Shire.

At 0600 hours on the Sunday morning of January 09, 1983, the Fire Control Officer received advice that a Total Fire ban had been declared commencing at 0900 hours and a bushfire alert was issued.

As usual, like any other extreme fire danger day the Heathcote Brigade members attended station 12, Bottle forest Road Heathcote at 0800 hours.

Around 0916 hours triple zero received a call from a member of the public advising of a smoke sighting within the Royal National Park in the location known as Temptation Creek.

By 0918 Loftus Brigade & Group Officer North were on scene and determined the fire was significant and required most of the district’s resources to be deployed to the scene, as was the normal firefighting approach taken to attack the fire.

As the fire progressed to the East it moved rapidly towards the Gray’s Point Public School which came under attack with multiple resources deployed to defend the school.
At around lunchtime the Heathcote 82 tanker’s pump suffered a mechanical failure, and the Brigade’s second tanker Heathcote 81 was deployed to Gray’s Point and relieved the Heathcote 82 tanker.

In the early afternoon it started to rain for a short period. However, at around 1600 hours the temperature remained at 40C with a RH of 20%. The quick rain showers did little to suppress the fire.
It was decided that six firefighting tankers including Heathcote 81 would progress up the Angle Road fire trail tasked with trying to stop the fire.

At around 1620 hours, crew members working near the 81 tanker called out about a person they had seen to the right, higher up on the Angle Road Trail. Two were sent to get the woman to safety, one escorted the woman off the fire ground, while the other returned to Heathcote 81.

It was about 1626 hours. The Heathcote 81 tanker was driven out onto the trail and turned left, pointing down the hill where one of the other six tankers transferred its water to Heathcote 81. At this time the hose line that were working off the side of the trail was pulled in and half the hose was dragged down the hill to Angle Road by 1 member of crew, while the other half was dragged back up to the tanker.

The red call, now known as an Emergency Call, was made at 1628 hours by Heathcote 81 as fire had crossed the trail behind the tanker that had transferred its water, so were requesting information on that tanker’s status / situation.

The fire had progressed such that it was at the point that the tanker and it’s crew could not safely negotiate the way out.

To improve the exit safety one firefighter was dispatched to burn out the remaining vegetation to the south and west of the intersection with the Temptation Creek fire trail. During this period the Heathcote 81 repositioned to the top of the ridge where the woman had been sighted earlier. Approximately 13 minutes after the Red Call the fire struck the tanker in this location.

By 1654 hours the Heathcote 81 crew made their way down the trail on foot to safety meeting the waiting emergency services including Police, Ambulance and Fire + Rescue. All the injured firefighters were transported to Sutherland Hospital with one transported to Concord Burns Unit.

Two firefighters died at the scene and one the next day. Horrific injuries were suffered by all surviving members of the truck’s crew.
The injured firefighters spent from two weeks in hospital up to 6 months with one firefighter spending over 10 months recovering in Concord hospital and a further 12 months of inpatient rehabilitation.

To this day while some moved on, members of the Heathcote 81 crew remained as members of the RFS and continue to voluntarily serve the community. (2024)

The fire was extinguished on 11 January with 377 ha of bush burnt.

Account written by Captain Jim Fowler. Heathcote 81 crew member. Revised by Dr Robert Sawyer, Heathcote 81 crew member and Sharon Campbell, Heathcote 81 crew member.

“For the crew, their families and those directly involved on the 09th of January 1983, this day will be forever etched in their minds as the fire that changed their lives”.

Illawarra Sutherland brigades are incredibly proud to have partnered with Coomaditchie United Aboriginal Corporation to commission and display authentic Aboriginal artworks that honour the Dreaming stories of the Dharawal Nation.

Created by artists Lorranie Brown and Narrelle Thomas, Wiritijibin - The First Lyrebird tells a powerful Dreamtime story of an Elder who, after protecting and saving her people from a bushfire, became a Lyrebird. It is a story of courage, protection, and connection to Country - a deeply meaningful and fitting story for our brigades to carry on their appliances.

Coomaditchie have also generously gifted a second artwork to Loftus Volunteer Bushfire Brigade, titled Sutherland Dreaming Lands. This artwork reflects the beauty and cultural significance of the Royal National Park, depicting animals, plants, waterways, walkways and special places unique to Sutherland on Dharawal Country - a place rich in history, mystery and living culture.

Loftus Volunteer Bushfire Brigade now proudly display both artworks across their appliances, while Dapto Rural Fire Brigade and NSW RFS - Mt Keira Brigade are now carrying Lyrebird Dreaming following the completion of the wraps yesterday.

You'll soon start seeing these artworks in your community - a visibly and meaningful connection between our brigades, the community and Dharawal Country. We are honoured to carry these stories and thank Coomaditchie United Aboriginal Corporation for their generosity, guidance and collaboration.

🔥Moderate Fire Danger - Sunday 7 December🔥

Weather conditions are easing and we will see a return to more mild weather over the coming days.

However, with no substantial rain since September, our bushland and grass fuels are extremely dry. Even under Moderate conditions, any spark can start a fire that will spread and take hold quickly.

If you’re working or travelling this weekend:

⚙️Be mindful of heat and sparks from machinery

đźšDispose of ci******es responsibly

🔥Consider delaying unnecessary burning or use of fire

📞Report any unattended fires immediately via Triple Zero (000)

A Moderate rating is not a green light - the fuel is still primed to burn.

Stay alert, stay prepared, and look out for your community.
