🌧️ FLASH FLOODING RESPONSE – SUTHERLAND SHIRE SES

Last night was a significant operational period for the NSW SES across Greater Sydney.

Across the metropolitan area, volunteers responded to more than 400 incidents and conducted 40+ flood rescues following intense rainfall that impacted the region.

Several flood rescue teams from the Sutherland Shire were activated, with our members deploying to assist with flood rescues at:
• Audley Weir

• Liverpool

We are incredibly proud of the professionalism and dedication shown by our volunteers, who worked through challenging conditions to keep the community safe.

We are also grateful for the support of partner agencies including NSW Police, NSW Ambulance and local RFS volunteers who supported at many of these incidents.

🚗 A reminder to the community: If it’s flooded, forget it.

• Avoid non-essential travel during heavy rainfall
• Never drive, ride or walk through floodwater
• Follow warnings and advice from emergency services

⚠️ SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WARNING FORECAST for Friday 17th October

⚡️⛈️ Severe thunderstorms are possible tomorrow across central eastern and northeastern areas, becoming likely across parts of the Central West, northern Illawarra, Sydney, Hunter and Mid North Coast.

💨🍃 Damaging wind gusts (> 90 km/h) and large hailstones (> 2 cm) are the main risks in these storms.

If isolated supercells form, they may bring destructive gusts (> 125 km/h) and giant hailstones (> 5 cm)

⏰ These storms are likely during the afternoon commencing with isolated cells inland.

As the southerly change reaches the central coastal areas, severe thunderstorm risk increases significantly with isolated supercell formation being possible in metro areas.

Thunderstorms may continue into the late evening following the change up the coast, or even overnight.

💭 Let’s all make smart, safe decisions — not just for ourselves, but for the well-being of those around us. Stay safe and stay informed.

ℹ️ The State Emergency Service advises that people should:

🚗 Move vehicles under cover or away from trees.

🪢 Secure or put away loose items around your house, yard and balcony.

↔️ Keep at least 8 metres away from fallen power lines or objects that may be energised, such as fences.

📲 Report fallen power lines to either Ausgrid (131 388) or as shown on your power bill.

📲 For emergency help in floods and storms, ring the NSW SES on 132 500

📲 If life-threatening call 000 (Triple Zero).
